Napoleon vows to 'blow up' Kremlin in coded letter

Christophe Ena / AP

Napoleon's secret coded letter, shown here in this photo taken Nov. 28, declares his intentions "to blow up the Kremlin" during his ill-fated Russian campaign in 1812.

By The Associated Press

FONTAINEBLEAU, France --?The single line of Napoleon's secret code told Paris of his desperate, last order against the Russians: "At three o'clock in the morning, on the 22nd I am going to blow up the Kremlin."

By the time Paris received the letter three days later, the Russian czar's seat of power was in flames and the diminished French army was in retreat. Its elegantly calligraphic ciphers show history's famed general at one of his weakest moments.

"My cavalry is in tatters, many horses are dying," dictated Napoleon, the once-feared leader showing the strain of his calamitous Russian invasion, which halved his army.

The rare document -- dated Oct. 20, 1812, signed "Nap" in the emperor's hand and written in numeric code -- is up for auction Sunday at France's Fontainebleau Auction House.

The Napoleon code, used only for top-secret letters when the French emperor was far from home, aimed to stop enemies from intercepting French army orders. The code was regularly changed to prevent it from being cracked.

A 'different Napoleon'
Napoleon must have dispatched his strongest horses and riders to carry the news: It only took three days to reach France's interior ministry -- 1,540 miles across Europe.

"This letter is unique. Not only is it all in code, but it's the first time we see this different Napoleon. He went into Moscow in 1812 at the height of his power. He returned profoundly weakened. In Moscow, the Russians had fled days before and burnt down the city. There was no victory for Napoleon, nor were there any provisions for his starving, dying army," says Jean-Christophe Chataignier of the auction house.

The only thing left for the weakened leader was to give the order to burn Russia's government buildings -- coded in the letter as "449, 514, 451, 1365..."

'Incredible insight'
It is evidence of what historians call the beginning of the end of Napoleon's glorious empire, which started in Russia and ended at Waterloo three years later.

Experts: Unbreakable code message found on WWII carrier pigeon

In June 1812, Napoleon's "Grand Army" -- at 600,000 men one of the largest in human history -- confidently entered Russia. But they were woefully unprepared for the harsh weather, the strong Russian defense and the Russian scorched-earth tactics, which left nothing behind to sustain the hungry and freezing French troops.

"This letter is an incredible insight, we never see Napoleon emotively speaking in this way before," says Chataignier. "Only in letters to (his wife) Josephine did he ever express anything near to emotion. Moscow knocked him."

In the text -- which announces that his commanders are evacuating Moscow -- Napoleon laments his army's plight, asking for assistance to replenish his forces and the ravaged cavalry, which saw thousands of horses die.

In September, 200 years after Russia's victory over Napoleon, the Kremlin held huge celebrations aimed at rousing patriotism among modern Russians. The highlight was a re-enactment of the battle of Borodino -- one of the most damaging clashes for Napoleon's troops -- which saw thousands in Russian and French military uniforms perform before several hundred thousand spectators.

Complete Europe coverage on NBCNews.com

The 1812 victory played an important role in Russia's emergence as a major world power. Until World War I, Napoleon's Russian campaign and the ensuing wars were the largest European military face-off in history.

The letter, which is accompanied by a second decoded sheet, is estimated to fetch up to $19,500.

Large Hadron Collider may have produced a previously undetected form of matter

Large Hadron Collider may have produced previously unconfirmed form of matter

Teams at the Large Hadron Collider must be developing a knack for producing tangible evidence of theoretical particles. After orchestrating 2 million collisions between lead nuclei and protons, like the sort you see above, the collider's Compact Muon Solenoid group and researchers at MIT suspect that stray, linked pairs of gluon particles in the mix were signs of color-glass condensate, a currently theory-only form of matter that sees gluons travel in liquid-like, quantum-entangled waves. The clues aren't definitive, but they were also caught unexpectedly as part of a more routine collision run; the team is curious enough that it's looking for more evidence during weeks of similar tests in January. Any conclusive proof of the condensate would have an impact both on how we understand particle production in collisions as well as the ways gluons and quarks are arranged inside protons. If so, the CMS and MIT teams may well answer a raft of questions about subatomic physics while further justifying CERN's giant underground rings.

UK student escapes U.S. extradition in copyright case

LONDON (Reuters) - A British university student who launched a website linking to TV shows and films online for free has reached an agreement to avoid extradition to the US and possible jail over copyright infringement allegations, the High Court heard on Wednesday.

A deal struck on Wednesday means Richard O'Dwyer, the 24-year-old creator of website TVShack, which helped people watch free films but did not host content itself, will travel to the United States to pay a small fine and will not be extradited.

O'Dwyer faced becoming the first Briton to be extradited for such an offence and his lawyers argued he would effectively become a test case for copyright law in the United States.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales launched a petition in June against the possible extradition and called O'Dwyer "the human face of the battle between the content industry and the interests of the general public."

The court heard O'Dwyer, from Sheffield in northern England, is set to go to the United States within two weeks and pledge not to break copyright law again, the Press Association said.

Home Secretary (interior minister) Theresa May agreed to O'Dwyer's surrender after a court ruled in January that his extradition would be lawful.

In October, May blocked the extradition of computer hacker Gary McKinnon on charges of damaging U.S. military systems in a case campaigners said highlighted the unbalanced nature of Britain's extradition treaty with the United States.

Panel: Reyes may have broken ethics rules, law

(AP Photo/Lauren Victoria Burke, File)

(AP) ? An independent House panel has concluded that there is substantial reason to believe Texas Rep. Silvestre Reyes violated ethics rules and federal law by conducting campaign meetings on House property and using campaign money to pay expenses for his daughter's residence.

The Office of Congressional Ethics report was sent to the House Ethics Committee, which released the findings Wednesday and said it was continuing its own investigation of the eight-term Democratic lawmaker.

The office, run by a board of nonlegislators, investigates complaints and makes recommendations to the House Ethics Committee.

In Reyes' case, the office recommended that the ethics committee investigate and subpoena Reyes, who refused to cooperate with the office's probe. The House committee said the referral does not reflect any judgment that violations occurred.

Reyes spokesman, Jose Borjon, said in a statement that the lawmaker was "pleased that the Ethics Committee took no further action on this matter, while making clear that the fact of OCE's referral did not indicate that any violation occurred."

The statement said Reyes "fully responded to these unsupported allegations and cooperated with the Ethics Committee to resolve them" while carrying out his official duties "with the highest level of integrity, strictly adhering to the rules governing" the House.

The allegations were first reported by the El Paso (Texas) Times in May. The independent panel's report, adopted 6-0 in August but not publicly released at that time in accordance with House rules, found:

?Reyes' 2011 Federal Election Commission disclosure reports show he used $469 in campaign funds for five "campaign meetings" in the members' dining room in the Capitol.

?From 2008 through 2012, Reyes' campaign committee paid approximately $13,000 in expenses relating to his daughter's residence in Washington, where the congressman appears to have a campaign office. Expenses included pest control, Internet, telephone, cable and electricity.

The House Ethics Manual states that House property may not be used to conduct campaign or political activities, including strategy sessions.

Federal law makes it illegal for a federal employee, including the president, vice president or member of Congress, to solicit or receive donations ? or anything of value ? in property used for official government duties.

The manual says that if a House member's campaign conducts a transaction with the member or someone in his or her family, campaign records must establish the need for the goods and services, and efforts must be made to establish a fair market value.

Federal law says political donations cannot be converted to public use, and a House rule bars a member from converting the funds to personal use in excess of legitimate and verifiable campaign expenditures.

Sky's Now TV service comes to Roku streaming boxes in the UK

Sky's Now TV service is continuing its uphill battle against the armies of Netflix and Lovefilm today, setting up camp in Roku's streaming boxes. Matching its Xbox 360 launch offer, you'll be able to try the service for 30 days without charge, but it's added another enticing deal for the Roku launch -- pay a reduced price of £8.99 for the first three months before the regular £15 per month fee kicks in. As well as boasting its exclusive Harry Potter catalogue suitable for a holiday marathon, we've been told Sky Sports will finally be coming to Now TV "in a few months." Sky 1, Sky Atlantic, Sky Arts and Sky Living will also eventually be added to the service, but there's still not even a loose date for those. Now TV might not reach all the hardware it intended to before the end of the year, but at least with this latest launch, Roku can start showing Sky it was worth all that cash.

Electrical Engineering alumni has successful career in sales ...

While many consider the study and application of engineering to be a branch of science involved only with design and structures, James Contardi,Jim Contardi?1985 Iowa State electrical engineering alumnus, argues that engineering is more of a way of thinking. Contardi?s extensive career has brought him around the world and back, allowing him to grow primarily in the area of sales and sales management; something he feels is an important skill for all engineers.

Originally from Minneapolis, Minn., Contardi decided to attend Iowa State after high school, following in his father?s footsteps by declaring himself as an electrical engineering student.

After his sophomore year, Contardi served two summers as an intern for Control Data, now General Dynamics, in his hometown of Minneapolis. He spent two summers at the internship, using advanced CAD tools to create circuitry on computers for the defense department. While this work proved to be interesting, it taught Contardi that this was not something he wanted to make a career of.

During his senior year at Iowa State, Contardi attended one of the many career fairs held over the course of the year. There, he noticed a variety of companies searching for engineering students to fill technical sales positions.

?I recognized that sales wasn?t a strength of mine,? explains Contardi, ?but I knew being able to sell was important so I thought that a position like this would be a great opportunity for me to grow right out of college.?

After interviewing with IBM, he landed an entry-level sales position in Dallas, Texas. One of the highlights of the position included working on the General Motors account, IBM?s largest account worldwide at the time. Over the course of his nine years with IBM, Contardi advanced to sales manager after the company financed his MBA education through Southern Methodist University.

Reflecting on his experience, the importance of knowing how to sell is something he hopes engineering students will understand. ?They are going to be working for companies or other entities in the business world, and regardless of their title, they will all need to know how to sell,? he explains. ?Whether they are selling their ideas, selling their skills, or promoting their ideas, it?s a necessary ability to have.?

When IBM began to go through some changes, Contardi opted to join startup PC Service Source, serving as vice president of sales. PC Service Source specialized in managing out-sourced supply chain activities for the high tech industry. During this time, PC Service Source made the Business Week ?Hot 100? fast growing companies list.

Four years later, Contardi left the startup and accepted a job with i2 Technologies, a supply chain management software company. Entering the company as a sales manager, Contardi did an extensive amount of traveling, ultimately moving to London to serve as president of the European business.

Now back in the States, Contardi?s has sought out another new challenge. He currently works for First Data Corporation as senior vice president of product solutions and strategic sales, or head of one of the sales divisions for the company. Contardi is in his fourth year with First Data, a corporation well known for its global payment processing that is positioning it to capitalize on the coming wave of mobile payments technology.

As he now lives in Atlanta, Ga., where First Data is headquartered, Contardi finds it difficult to make regular trips make to Iowa State. He does however find time to check in with many of the university?s athletic programs, finding joy in the fact that the football team is once-again nationally ranked.

Contardi says he has many fond memories of Iowa State and wishes the best for young engineers studying there today.

?Students should be mindful of the fact that engineering is a way of thinking that can be applied to classic engineering problems as well as any sort of problem,? he explains. ?Being an engineer is a good discipline to have, regardless of how you plan to apply it.?

Reversing The Childhood Obesity Trend A Necessary Long Shot ...

From The Dallas News?..

A coalition of educators, health care providers, community advocates and business leaders has set a highly ambitious health care goal for Dallas County: ending childhood obesity by 2020.

Yes, highly ambitious. Dallas County kids have a weight problem. Federal statistics show 36 percent of them are overweight or obese. Just in the 10-to-17 age category, 20 percent are obese.

Obesity has been increasing in the nation for 30 years, and only a few places have managed to slow the rate of increase.

Reversing the trend is harder still.

?We?ve looked at 51 school programs that had tried to prevent and treat obesity. The long-term results of all 51 were negligible,? said Richard Atkinson, editor of the International Journal of Obesity. ?The idea that they are going to be able to do it in Dallas is zero. ? It pains me to say that, because I?ve spent my entire life working on this issue, but the things we?re doing are not working.?

Susan Hoff, chief strategy officer with United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, is a member of the coalition. She said the goal of eliminating obesity is bold but necessary.

?Compelling goal?

?One of the things that we in the steering committee agreed is critical is to have a single compelling goal that everybody can rally around,? she said.

Whether the goal is achievable remains to be seen. But the need is overwhelming.

Obesity can lead to more than 20 chronic illnesses, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some types of cancer.

Children who are obese miss more school, do worse academically and are more likely to be bullied and drop out of school than their lighter peers.

This increases health care costs, and insurance and productivity costs for Dallas businesses. Four years ago, the Texas Department of Health estimated obesity would cost the state $39 billion in health care and productivity costs by 2040. The Trust for America?s Health this fall said Texas was facing a much higher obesity bill ? $51.7 billion by 2030.

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs has tried to warn the state?s business community that many of these costs will fall on them.

?What I think is still missing is sort of a sense of urgency,? Combs said in a recent interview.

The Committee for the Improvement of Child Health and the Eradication of Childhood Obesity in Dallas County is a powerful group of more than 60 community leaders. The co-chairs are Dr. Eduardo Sanchez, chief medical officer of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, and George Manning, partner-in-charge of the Texas region with the law firm Jones Day.

Leaders from the Cooper Institute, the Dallas Regional Chamber, Children?s Medical Center, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and Parkland Health & Hospital System are steering committee members.

It seems easier to attack the problem among children than adults, because kids spend most of their time in school.

Two-thirds of Dallas County children are eligible for free or subsidized school lunches. In the Dallas Independent School District, it?s 84 percent.

Invest in Your Home by Replacing Old Windows | Boston Homes ...

Five words or less(NewsUSA) ? Nothing does more to enhance the look and feel of a home than windows ? especially if your house still has rickety single-pane glass windows. But replacing old windows doesn?t just add comfort by eliminating drafts, CNN Money says homeowners can see a significant return on their investment from increased resale value. Replacement windows can also help save money on energy bills every year.
According to a survey by Remodeling Magazine, the return on investment for replacing your windows is among the highest of typical remodeling projects. Not to mention, these estimates are modest with the emergence of more energy-efficient windows. Windows that not only can regulate temperature but also maximize sunlight in winter make a significant difference when heat and cooling bills are due.
Advancements in energy-efficient windows are helping homeowners save more on energy bills, not to mention recoup some of the cost of window replacement. The latest window designs include a combination of energy efficiency, durability and aesthetics. The Tuscany Series from Milgard, for example, comes Energy Star rated and is made from tough, durable vinyl.
But when homeowners are making an upfront purchase as expensive as new windows, they must be sure it?s the right time. Look for the following signs to inform you it?s time for new windows:
* Drafts. Drafts mean windows are no longer properly insulated, which may include the weather stripping.
* Soft wood. Tap window frames with a blunt tool to see if it can be easily pushed into the wood. Soft wood tends to be a sign of decay, mold or termite damage.
* Peeling paint on exterior. Moisture can travel through poorly sealed windows and back out to the outside of the house, which often causes exterior paint to peel and flake off.
* Problems opening or closing. Old windows have seen their share of fresh paint, meaning they may stick or fail to open at all. While it?s annoying to have a window that won?t open, it?s also a safety threat and a fire hazard.
For more information about replacing your windows, go to www.milgard.com. The website?s shopping tools section can help you select the right new windows for your home.

U.N. committee expresses concern for Myanmar's Muslims

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - A committee of the U.N. General Assembly expressed serious concern on Monday over violence in Myanmar between Rohingya Muslims and Buddhists and called upon the government to address reports of human rights abuses by some authorities.

The 193-nation General Assembly's Third Committee, which focuses on rights issues, approved by consensus a non-binding resolution, which Myanmar said contained a "litany of sweeping allegations, accuracies of which have yet to be verified."

Outbreaks of violence between ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and the Rohingyas have killed dozens and displaced thousands since June. Rights groups also have accused Myanmar security forces of killing, raping and arresting Rohingyas after the riots. Myanmar said it exercised "maximum restraint" to quell the violence.

The U.N. resolution "expressing particular concern about the situation of the Rohingya minority in Rakhine state, urges the government to take action to bring about an improvement in their situation and to protect all their human rights, including their right to a nationality."

At least 800,000 Muslim Rohingya live in Rakhine State along the coast of western Myanmar. But Buddhist Rakhines and other Burmese view them as illegal immigrants from neighboring Bangladesh who deserve neither rights nor sympathy.

The Myanmar mission to the United Nations told the Third Committee that while it accepted the resolution, it objected to the Rohingya being referred to as a minority.

"There has been no such ethnic group as Rohingya among the ethnic groups of Myanmar," a representative of Myanmar's U.N. mission said. "Despite this fact, the right to citizenship for any member or community has been and will never be denied if they are in line with the law of the land."

NOT PERSECUTION

A Reuters investigation into the wave of sectarian assaults painted a picture of organized attacks against the Muslim community. [ID:nL3E8M7ADZ] During an historic visit to Myanmar last week, U.S. President Barack Obama called for an end to incitement and violence. [ID:nL5E8MJ00Y]

"Violence in Rakhine state was just a violent communal clash affecting both sides of the community. It is not an issue of religious persecution," the Myanmar representative told the Third Committee.

During the past year, Myanmar has introduced the most sweeping reforms in the former British colony since a 1962 military coup. A semi-civilian government stacked with former generals has allowed elections, eased rules on protests and freed dissidents.

"Any shortcomings in the human rights field are being addressed through legal reform processes and legal reform mechanisms, including the national human rights commission," said the Myanmar representative.

The U.N. resolution also "urges the government to accelerate its efforts to address discrimination, human rights violations, violence, displacement and economic deprivation affecting various ethnic minorities" and expresses deep concern about an armed conflict in Kachin state.

Myanmar President Thein Sein has ordered troops in Kachin State not to attack the rebels, but has allowed them to defend themselves. The conflict there resurfaced in June 2011, scuttling a 16-year truce and displacing an estimated 50,000 people.

The Third Committee, which includes all members of the General Assembly, is also scheduled to debate resolutions on Iran, Syria and North Korea. A special General Assembly session next month is expected to formally adopt all recently approved committee resolutions.

(AP) ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced plans to travel to Cuba as early as Tuesday for more medical treatment after spending much of the past 18 months fighting cancer.

In a written request to the legislature, Chavez said doctors have recommended he "begin special treatment consisting of various sessions of hyperbaric oxygenation" and physical therapy to continue "consolidating the process of strengthening health."

The request did not provide more details about the treatment or Chavez's condition and was promptly approved by allied lawmakers at a special session in the city of Maracay. National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello read the request on television.

It said Chavez would travel to Cuba as soon as Tuesday. It did not say how long he will stay, though it said he would be back by Jan. 10, when he is being sworn in for a fourth term. Venezuelan law requires presidents to receive legislative approval before leaving the country for extended periods.

The treatment that Chavez is to undergo generally involves breathing pure oxygen while in a pressurized, sealed chamber. Its value is well-established for treating burns, carbon monoxide poisoning and some other medical conditions, and to aid wound healing and help repair bone and tissue damaged by radiation treatments.

However, the American Cancer Society says there is no evidence the treatment can cure cancer.

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment is employed by doctors in Cuba for the rehabilitation of patients with chronic illnesses, said Jesus Pena, a Venezuelan internist with a private practice in Caracas. But Pena said the announcement after a period of silence about Chavez's condition raises suspicions about the reasons behind the treatment.

Opposition lawmaker Alfonso Marquina expressed concern about what he said seems to be a "veiled or deliberate attempt to continue creating uncertainty."

Marquina told The Associated Press in a phone interview that if Chavez is traveling to Cuba for normal medical treatment as his request says, "the correct thing to do would be for a much more precise medical report to be given, and to not continue on with this sort of permanent uncertainty."

The 58-year-old president first underwent cancer treatment in Cuba in June 2011 and suffered a relapse in February. He has since said he's recovered from the pelvic cancer and won re-election in October.

Throughout his previous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, Chavez kept many details of his illness secret, including the type of cancer and the precise location of the tumors.

Chavez last appeared publicly during a televised meeting on Nov. 15, prompting some critics to publicly wonder where he went after his election win.

Opposition newspaper editor Teodoro Petkoff published an editorial in the daily Tal Cual on Tuesday before Chavez's announcement, criticizing the president's long absence.

Under the headline "The invisible man," Petkoff said: "The health of those who govern can't be a secret."

Sydney Levin: 'Teen Mom 2': A Family Is Split for Good

Jenelle
Since Jenelle literally has no friends she likes, she decides to circle back and check in on some people she previously couldn't stand. Remember sweet Tori, who actually bashed Jenelle's face in? Time to be palsies again! Jenelle has found a creative way to bring Tori back into her life. She says "I just don't have anybody, that's why I wanted to come talk to you." She has a peace offering of sorts, too, and it's a pretty big deal: Ke$ha tickets. "She's like my favorite artist ever and I have to go. She's so important to me," Jenelle says. So important that you'll call up people who physically beat you down so that you don't have to go alone? Now that, my friends, is devotion.

Later, Jenelle meets her lawyer in a restaurant that looks like someone's rec room -- I just keep waiting for the weird, unmarried uncle to walk down. Anyway, her attorney is one of those cool, youngish attorneys who is "just like you!" if "you" is someone who wears sunglasses on a rope. Jenelle explains that she still chooses jail over probation, so her lawyer pulls out his phone to consult his calendar. "They're asking for the 8th through the 23rd," he says casually, like they're booking brunch. "It'll be a total of 16 days in jail," he clarifies, since he's not sure if Jenelle can count to double digits.

Jenelle whips out her phone and realizes that oops, she has a conflict. Actually, it's a total deal-breaker: she has second row seats to a Ke$ha concert. Sorry, legal system ... girlfriend's got her heart set on a killer night of thinly-veiled songs about blow jobs, so you're just gonna have to wait! Actually, here's a compromise. If she promises to embrace love as her drug instead of marijuana, could she maybe just skip prison altogether?

Ke$ha is a huge proponent of that, as evidenced in her song "Your Love Is My Drug." It goes: "Because your love, your love, your love, is my drug. Your love your love your love, I said your love, your love, your love, is my drug. Your love your love your love. I like your beard." I don't fully get that last bit, but everyone knows that the most important music rarely makes sense.

Lawyer smiles his best "I am only here because she pre-paid her retainer" smile and says that a reschedule isn't going to work. "You don't understand," Jenelle stutters. "She is my IDOL. I really can't miss that concert. That's why I got all these feathers in my hair." She gestures to all the feathers in her hair for effect. "I bought clothes for this concert. I set up hotel rooms for the concert."

Lawyer reminds her that a clean record could potentially be more important than staying in a rat-infested motel and picking up sparkly new STDs, but Jenelle's not hearing him. She WANTS those sparkly STDs. Don't you understand, idiot lawyer? She got FEATHERS IN HER HAIR in hopes of getting those STDs. "It's not JUST a concert," Jenelle tries to explain. "It's Ke$ha. I'm obsessed with this girl."

The more she talks, the more everything is starting to make sense: her obsessive chatter, the way she's secret eating french fries like her life depends on it ... the girl is totally stoned out of her demented face. She has no idea what she's talking about -- but judging from my Google search for "Kesha+lyrics," not making sense is a big part of liking her. My personal favorite discovery? The line "I threw up in the closet and I don't care." I really just adore a girl who lets her heart be her guide. And if that guide brings your drunk body sailing into a mess of pea coats, just go ahead and hurl. This is AMERICA.

But before Jenelle can decide between jail or probation, her probation officer decides for her. She shows up with a random drug test -- and since Jenelle fails, she's carted off to the big house immediately. She calls her mom and explains that her bond is $10,000 and it'll cost $1,000 to get her out. "No!," Bahhbrahh yells. "Sahhry. You make me so angry! You keep smoking weed weed weed weed. Sit in jail and pay the phrice." Jenelle wails that she'll be stuck there until August, but Bahhbrahh's seen some Dr. Phil and she's embracing tough love. "This is what's gonna happen. I get you outta jail, you hop in ya cahh, and I won't see you for a week. The hell with you! Sit in jail, I'm not comin', goohbye." Then, she hangs up with a triumphant click. Cuhlick.

Chelsea
The interesting thing about Chelsea's life is that she starts every morning by looking in the mirror and thinking: "How can I look as much like a cave person as humanly possible?" Since today is a big day (she's going to watch Adam's bike thing race), she paints special cave drawings onto her face and tortures her hair until we can actually hear it scream. Seriously, her head is like Abu Ghraib for follicles.

Adam's basically living at her house, which is a problem 'cause her dad hates his guts. Oh by the way, her dad will also be watching Aubree while she secretly hangs with Adam today, no big deal. He definitely won't find out about any of this because Chelsea is historically very, very good at keeping secrets.

But today, it's her own garage that betrays her. See, the thing about quietly moving someone into your house is that you should not leave his huge tires, bikes and assorted white trash boy accoutrement right where anybody in the driveway can see them. Dad furiously calls Chelsea who quickly says Adam is simply "working on some stuff" there. PLUS DAD, she's paying her own rent now anyway so just take your babysitting and your unconditional love and support and shove it!

Luckily the fight doesn't keep her from missing the big race at Gramma's MX Park. As Adam doesn't stand up or look her in the eye or hold her hand, it's obvious that he is very glad she has come all this way! Her little heart soars as he zooms over mounds of dirt. "I LOVE HIM!" she says giddily to her friend, like Ariel. Only problem here is that this land mermaid's daddy hasn't learned the whole truth yet. Oh, whoops, that night he learns the truth! Apparently he came over and forced Adam to leave, which makes things very awkward for Chelsea. She's worried that the fight will taint Aubree's big birthday party, and laments her situation to some friends who either also have babies or rented them on the way over. Luckily, Aubree has no idea what's going on and only wants to shake her booty on command and "get low." That's not a joke. Chelsea actually talks to her like she's a backup dancing dog for Jennifer Lopez.

As Chelsea drives to the f?te, she becomes more and more anxious about her baby daddy. Her scary red-headed pal, who will hence forth be called Really Raggedy Ann, is like "I've only got 567 layers of this pink lipstick on, can you see it? Oh and also why would he not come?" Oh, I don't know Really Raggedy Ann, maybe 'cause he'll always be the same ol' guy who texted Chelsea "it's so over for the rest of ourlives ya fat stretch mark bitch tell me where and wen [sic] to sign the papers over for that mistake" in season 2? Note: That is word-for-word the text he sent, no editorial license.

They hop out at the arcade and quickly do their best to spice up one of the depressing little party rooms. At first, it really looks like the place Chuck E. Cheese would come to end it all. (Rancid cheese pills are the downfall of so many bloated, formerly famous mice.) But Chelsea kicks it into parenting mode and starts spreading out funky table cloths while her dad brings leopard balloons and a snazzy, pricey lookin' pink leopard cake. Together, they really do transform the space: It's gaudy in a way that appeals to babies, transvestites, and me. Few decorators reach such a varied audience. Though the area is finally bright, Chelsea's mood is dark. An hour into the party and Adam's still absent. But you know what probably hurts even worse? The fact that she never expected anything better.

Two hours into the party -- which, for tiny kids, is basically the end of a party -- Adam shows up wearing his best "I'm miserable" smirk. He finally cracks a smile as Aubree hops into her new, shiny pink baby Jeep. Then, Adam pops out to his car to grab his much more low-tech gift ... a little bike with training wheels. Though he had the best intentions, Aubs can't ride it yet and she runs away screaming. Love that she's learning at such a young age to always embrace name-brand over random junk. Plus, you should never take anything a boy tries to give you from the back of a truck.

Leah
When Leah checks the mail -- or rather, the 100 mailboxes that inexplicably are mounted right in front of her trailer -- she has something from her lawyer. She admits that she never intended for the divorce to happen, and every step toward finalization is like being stabbed in the heart. No, it's more painful ... it's like someone saying "there's no more bottled bleach left in the world."

As she drops the girls off with Corey for his weekend, he hands her a crumpled check for child support and she makes a snarky comment about his new truck. "That's why I left," she says, alluding to how he chose buying a new ve-hickle over a better trailer for his family. "Aw, you're gonna make me peeee my pants!" he says, grinning like an unhinged coon hound. "I'm sure they woulda loved their mom and dad together a lot more than a truck," Leah persists. No, actually Leah, I'm sure the twins would prefer you spend some of that child support on a strapless bra so that we could really appreciate your tiny tops without all that bonus elastic distraction.

Friend Kayla comes over to hang out on Leah's porch -- well, technically her 3 stairs and a trailer platform -- and vent. Leah's starting to sound like a broken, sobbing record. What makes me the most angry is that she's not learning from her mistakes: Invest in waterproof mascara and eyeliner, girl! She's got a sort of 'Dark Knight' Joker thing going on as she babbles "I loved him" and does a lot of emotional and violent face rubbing.

When she sees Corey again to pick up the babies (I genuinely like that she calls them "girlfriend" and "sister"), Corey asks if the truck was the real reason for the split. Then he casually mentions how she screwed Robbie before their wedding -- do ya think that played a part, Leah? "I think we both did hurt to each other," she says wisely. "I tried to do marriage counseling," she reminds him. "I tried to do everything to do," he replies unintelligibly, careful not to lose any of that dip in his lip. At this point, they're about to murder each other in the parking lot. They decide they want to get along for the girls before jumping in their respective rides and looking pensive. Note that this time, Leah has a bikini top on under her shirt. Slow and steady changes, Leah. Slow and steady.

On the day of the court hearing, she throws on her best two-piece department store suit. Corey is donning his business casual day-glo green t-shirt and camo hat for the occasion. Afterwards, they share a bench and look shell-shocked. "We just have to be good parents," Corey says slowly. "I wish you the best," Leah chokes out. That is definitely my number one favorite passive aggressive goodbye. It simultaneously means "I'd still bone you right this very second" and "I will be torturing you for the rest of your life, don't worry." Dramatically, she takes off her ring and leaves it on the dresser. I'd suggest she pawn it, but Corey probably found it at the bottom of a cereal box, and you know Cap'n Crunch is notoriously cheap.

Kailyn
Kailyn says she "still has feelings for Jo, but [is] trying to get over them because [she's] trying to make it work with Jordan." Translation: One dude ignores her, the other doesn't. She's sticking with the one who doesn't. Such a positive groundwork for young love to flourish upon! Since Jordan worships her, things are going very well. She's even washing her hair again!

But then, everything comes crashing down when a friend sends her a link of Jo and his new lady love. As Kailyn does light Facebook stalking, she uses her super-sleuth skills to decode that Jo is tipsy in a photo (the caption says "a little tipsy), and it's the same day he had Isaac. Kailyn flips out, horrified that he's choosing time with a random Vee when he could be with hers. (That line was my boyfriend's idea, obviously.) But let's be honest: You know drinking was all Isaac's idea. He's probably passed out with some stuffed animal bitches and a bottle of warm milk. Don't hate the player, hate the pacifier.

When she calls Jo to confront him, he says that A) Isaac was safe with his grandmother and B) he wasn't drinking. After a very frustrating 10 second call, she hangs up on him (well, technically first she drops the phone and then she hangs up) and does her patented far-away Cosette face. Le Teen Mom Miserables.

To blow off some steam, Kailyn pretends to eat/enjoy vegan food at a restaurant called Vegan Treats with one of her many random pals. Since everyone has that same lower lip piercing, I can't tell them apart. She's considering going to a lawyer to get revenge on Jo -- I mean, 'cause she wants more weekend time with Isaac.

She quickly goes to visit her attorney -- you remember her, Kate Gosselin's more well-educated twin? Kate Gosselin, Esquire agrees that it makes sense for Kailyn to have Isaac on the weekends. After all, with school and work, Kailyn rarely gets any quality time with her son. Still, Jo will need to agree with that ... and though it'll give him more time for shenanigans, his favorite game is still toying with Kailyn's head.

"Teen Mom 2" airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.

DR Congo's M23 rebel leader heads to Uganda for withdrawal talks

M23's reported connections with Uganda and Rwanda complicate a resolution in eastern Congo.

By Arthur Bright,?Staff writer / November 26, 2012

A woman carries her child in Minova, some 28 miles west of Goma November 26, 2012. Congo said on Sunday it would not negotiate with M23 rebels in the east until they pulled out of the city of Goma, but a rebel spokesman said Kinshasa was in no position to set conditions on peace talks.

The leader of the Congolese rebel group M23, which sacked the city of Goma a week ago, is set to meet officials in neighboring Uganda for negotiations over the group's withdrawal. But various reports indicate that M23 is operating under the auspices of the Rwandan government, suggesting that a resolution to the immediate crisis may require international pressure as well.

An M23 spokesman told Reuters that Col. Sultani Makenga, leader of M23, will meet with Ugandan defense chief Aronda Nyakayirima in the capital of Kampala on Monday to discuss M23's withdrawal from Goma. The Ugandan military could not immediately confirm M23's claim to Reuters, but stated that such negotiations were ongoing.?

"I am not aware of his arrival but I wouldn't be surprised if he were here because meetings have been going on and since Aronda has been tasked to coordinate the withdrawal (from Goma) he would need to talk to him (Makenga)," military spokesman Felix Kulayigye said.

Reports indicate that M23 and Congolese officials met on Sunday as well. The Associated Press writes that Ugandan Defense Minister Crispus Kiyonga said he was overseeing negotiations between the two sides, and Rene Abandi, M23's head of external relations, told AP that M23 representatives attended a two-hour meeting with Congolese President Joseph Kabila and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Sunday, a day after a regional summit in Uganda that called upon M23 to withdraw from Goma. The DR Congo government denies involvement in any negotiations.

The resolution of the situation in eastern Congo is complicated due to the M23's connections with both Uganda and Rwanda. A United Nations report released last week asserts that both countries are providing support to the rebels, with the Rwandan military in active command of the group. AP writes that both Rwanda and Uganda have repeatedly denied supporting the M23 movement and have faced little international criticism over the allegations, but the report is apt to increase pressure on both countries.

The highly anticipated report from the U.N. Group of Experts said both Rwanda and Uganda have "cooperated to support the creation and expansion of the political branch of M23 and have consistently advocated on behalf of the rebels. M23 and its allies include six sanctioned individuals, some of whom reside in or regularly travel to Rwanda and Uganda."

11 skinned puppies found in bag in Pennsylvania

By Reuters

Animal welfare investigators on Monday sought clues in the skinning of 11 puppies whose bodies were found stuffed in a bag left in a ditch in eastern Pennsylvania.

The gruesome discovery was made on Friday in Lower Macungie, about 20 miles from Lynn Township, where days earlier another animal carcass was found skinned and cooked, with its feet cut off, said Bruce Fritch, board president of the Lehigh County Humane Society, which is investigating the slayings.

"It's just heinous," Fritch said.

A black plastic sack containing the skinless puppy bodies was found by a woman walking her dog near a park in Lower Macungie.

The puppies appeared to be no more than 2 weeks old and the only hair left on their bodies was on the paws, although it was such a small amount that investigators were unable to determine the color, Fritch said.

The bodies were taken to a veterinary hospital, where experts attempted to determine the cause of death, he said.

"It's terrible," Fritch said. "Hopefully, somebody saw something and will come forward."

Investigators were conducting DNA tests to determine whether the animal found in Lynn was a dog, a coyote or another animal.

Congo and M23 rebels negotiate in Uganda

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) ? Uganda's defense minister says he is mediating talks between Congolese officials and representatives of M23, the rebel group that last week took control of the eastern Congolese city of Goma and threatens to topple the government of President Joseph Kabila.

Minister Crispus Kiyonga said Sunday that Uganda is trying to help both sides reach a settlement that would end a violent rebellion that has sucked in Uganda and Rwanda, which both face charges of backing the rebels.

Kiyonga did not name the M23 representatives and Congolese government officials with whom he is meeting in the Ugandan capital Kampala.

A summit of regional leaders on Saturday called on the rebels to leave Goma and urged Kabila to listen to the "legitimate grievances" of M23.

No. 1 Notre Dame beats USC 22-13, earns title shot

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The Fighting Irish punched their ticket to Miami.

Theo Riddick rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown, Kyle Brindza kicked five field goals, and No. 1 Notre Dame secured a spot in the BCS championship game with a 22-13 victory over Southern California on Saturday night.

Everett Golson passed for 217 yards as the Irish (12-0) completed their first perfect regular season since 1988, earning a trip to south Florida on Jan. 7 to play for the storied program's first national title in 24 years.

Although they did little with flash on an electric night at the Coliseum, the Irish woke up more echoes of past Notre Dame greats with a grinding effort in this dynamic intersectional rivalry with USC (7-5), which has lost four of five.

Notre Dame's hard-nosed defense appropriately made the decisive stand in the final minutes, keeping USC out of the end zone on four plays from the Irish 1 with 2:33 to play.

"Well, that's who we are," Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said. "It's been our defense all year. Our offense is able to manage enough points."

After spending more than a decade looking up at the Trojans, the Irish are back on top of this rivalry with two straight wins in Los Angeles. The school of Knute Rockne, the Four Horsemen and Paul Hornung has new heroes now, from inspirational linebacker Manti Te'o to Kelly, who took the Irish from unranked to start the season to No. 1 in the AP Top 25 for the first time in 19 years.

Te'o, the Heisman Trophy hopeful, had a key interception against USC and became the second Irish defender with three 100-tackle seasons ? and he took particular pride in that last defensive stand, which included three straight Trojans runs resulting in nothing.

"It doesn't matter where the ball is," Te'o said. "We're going to protect the end zone at all costs."

After Brindza's school record-tying fifth field goal put the Irish up by nine points with 5:58 left, Marqise Lee caught a 53-yard pass from USC freshman Max Wittek at the Notre Dame 2.

But after USC failed on three straight runs at a defense that has allowed just 11 rushing TDs in 30 games, Wittek threw incomplete to fullback Soma Vainuku, setting off a leaping, chest-bumping celebration on the Notre Dame sideline and in the Irish sections of the sold-out Coliseum.

"They've had a great goal-line defense all year," USC coach Lane Kiffin said. "They've done that to everybody down on the goal line. ... It's just so hard to score touchdowns versus them. When the ball is on the 2-inch line, you'd think you could score touchdowns."

The grind-it-out win highlighted an unforgettable season for the Irish, who began the year with questions about their relevancy and survived some uninspiring performances and nail-biting finishes with their unbeaten record intact.

Notre Dame is likely to face an Southeastern Conference opponent in Miami, but won't know for another week which one. Alabama and Georgia play for the SSEC title in Atlanta.

With the Irish offense repeatedly stalling in the red zone against the Trojans, Brindza went five for six on field goals, even hitting a 52-yarder at the halftime gun.

Wittek passed for 186 yards with two interceptions in his first career start for the Trojans, who completed their tumble from the preseason No. 1 ranking with four losses in five games in an enormously disappointing season. Wittek filled in capably for injured Matt Barkley, but USC is headed to a lower-tier bowl in the first year after its NCAA-mandated two-year postseason ban ended.

Lee caught five passes for 75 yards, yet still broke the Pac-12 single-season receptions record established last year by teammate Robert Woods, who had seven catches for 92 yards.

Barkley watched from the sideline in a grey hoodie with a sling on his right arm after spraining his shoulder in last week's loss at UCLA. The senior and Pac-12 career passing leader won twice in South Bend during his career, but never got to face the Irish at the Coliseum, sidelined by injuries for both visits.

Barkley still ran down the Coliseum tunnel with the rest of the USC seniors for their final home game. He participated in the coin toss, but could only watch while the Irish opened the game with three clock-consuming drives resulting in 13 points.

USC's much-criticized defensive caution under assistant head coach Monte Kiffin was exploited by the Irish, with Golson patiently finding the sags in the Trojans' pass coverage for 181 yards passing in the first half. Riddick went 9 yards for a TD in the first quarter, but USC also stiffened to hold Notre Dame to field goals twice in the red zone.

Notre Dame held its 12th straight opponent without a first-quarter touchdown, but Wittek found Woods for a 9-yard score on the first play of the second quarter ? just the ninth touchdown allowed by Notre Dame all season long. The Irish took a 16-10 lead to halftime when Brindza hit the second-longest field goal in Notre Dame history.

Te'o made the seventh interception of his phenomenal season when Wittek threw directly to him on USC's second play of the second half. Both teams struggled to move the ball in the third quarter, and USC settled for a field goal with 9:20 to play just a few moments after Kiffin called a timeout right before a play that ended with Lee appearing to catch a pass on the goal line.
