PST: Still waiting word on Eddie Johnson

We still don?t know much about Eddie Johnson?s hamstring, which is threatening his availability for Friday?s playoff opener against Real Salt Lake.

Johnson has been more confident lately than we?ve seen him in years ? since he left Kansas City back in 2007 for four lost years abroad.

With 14 goals, he was Seattle?s leading scorer this year and the league?s sixth best scorer. But Johnson left Sunday?s regular season finale in the first half and was schedule to undergo an MRI on Monday. Team officials have yet to say how that turned out.

Meanwhile, we can tell you how head coach Sigi Schmid feels about his team?s loss to Los Angeles down in Southern California to finish the regular season:

I think we are ready for the playoffs, tonight has to be a good motivator. Sometimes when you get slapped a little bit towards the end of the season it can be a good thing because it reminds you of how that feels, and it is a feeling that you don?t want to have come back. I think this team definitely has what it takes to make a run at the championship. There is enough quality on the field, enough quality on our bench, and the desire is definitely there.?

Eat to Compete!: Added Sugars: The Scary Truth!

Halloween is that time of year when kids rejoice, parents groan and dentists cringe. The holiday by tradition is filled with sugar-glazed donuts, gooey caramel apples and chewy candies of all sorts. It is a good thing Halloween comes only once a year, as regular intake of these high-sugar foods wreaks havoc on our health in more ways than one. A study assessing the U.S. NHANES 2007-2008 data reported that added sugars provided 14.6% of total energy intake in individuals' diets with the main contributors being soda and energy/sports drinks, grain-based desserts, fruit drinks, dairy desserts and candy. The USDA recommends no more than 32gm (or 8 tsp) of added sugars/day per 2,000 Kcal of intake; this is equivalent to 6% of calories from added sugars.

So after the costumes are put away and the candy is eaten (or thrown away), what can you do on a daily basis to make sure your intake of added sugars isn't sky-high? First, lets review the facts:

Added sugars are sugars and syrups that are added to foods or beverages during processing or preparation
Added sugars does not include naturally occurring sugars such as those that occur in milk and fruits.
While the body does not metabolize added vs. natural sugars differently, sources of natural sugars often contain other nutrients such as fiber or vitamins and minerals. These other nutrients benefit our overall level of health and also affect the total metabolism of the food.
Foods that contain added sugars include: soft drinks, candy, cakes, cookies, pies, fruit drinks (fruitades, fruit punch, Tang), milk-based desserts and products (ice cream, sweetened yogurt and sweetened milk), grain products (sweet rolls, cinnamon toast, donuts, Pop-Tarts, sweetened cereals, Toaster Strudels, etc.). Clearly this is not an all-inclusive list!

If you are confident the product contains only added sugars, you can calculate the number of teaspoons of sugar in that food or drink. For every 4 grams of sugar on?a food label (look at total carbohydrate)?that is equal to 1 teaspoon of sugar in the food. Here are a few examples:

One 12 fl. oz. can of regular soda = 40 grams sugar = 10 tsp sugar
1 jelly-filled donut = 36 grams sugar = 9 tsp sugar
One 2 oz. (regular-sized) Snickers candy bar = 34 grams sugar = 8.5 tsp sugar
1 cup chocolate ice cream = 38 grams sugar = 9.5 tsp

The problem with targeting added sugars in our diet is that finding the added sugars is sometimes not as obvious. Many products that we believe to contain only natural sugars (such as, perhaps, yogurt) actually contain added sugars as well.?With these foods,?looking at the food label doesn't help. While the label lists "sugars", this doesn't always mean added sugars if there are natural sugars present and so often confuses consumers.

So, be an added sugar detective! The next time you are looking at a product, find the ingredient list. If any of?these ingredients are listed, the product contains added sugars:
-brown sugar?????????????????????-invert sugar??????????????????-anhydrous dextrose
-corn sweetener????????????????-lactose????????????????????????? -confectioners powdered sugar
-corn syrup????????????????????????-maltose????????????????????????-corn syrup solids
-dextrose???????????????????????????-malt syrup??????????????????? -maple syrup
-fructose??????????????????????????? -molasses?????????????????????-nectars
-fruit juice concentrates?????-raw sugar???????????????????? -white granulated sugar
-glucose???????????????????????????? -sucrose??????????????????????? -cane juice, cane sugar
-high-fructose corn syrup?? -sugar
-honey??????????????????????????????? -syrup

Remember, too, that ingredients are listed by weight. So if an added sugar is one of the first few ingredients, the product is likely high in added sugar.

South Africa police fire rubber bullets at striking miners

RUSTENBURG, South Africa (Reuters) - South African police fired rubber bullets and teargas on Tuesday at striking Amplats miners who were protesting against a union-brokered deal to end a six-week wildcat walkout at the top platinum producer.

As they moved into a shanty town near the mines, police also deployed water cannons and stun grenades against groups of protesters armed with wooden sticks and stones. Women and children fled as they fanned out through the maze of tin huts.

One protester was dragged away bleeding heavily and unable to walk, and was treated by paramedics, a Reuters witness said.

The strikers at Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) mines near Rustenburg, 120 km (70 miles) northwest of Johannesburg, had been due to return to work following a company offer to reinstate 12,000 men sacked for downing tools six weeks ago.

"We are not giving up, we will soldier on," said striker John Tonsi, who had been shot in the leg by a rubber bullet. "We will fight for our cause until management comes to its senses."

Months of labor unrest in the mines have hit platinum and gold output, threatened growth in Africa's biggest economy and drawn criticism of President Jacob Zuma for his handling of the most damaging strikes since the end of apartheid in 1994.

Amplats said at the weekend it had reached a deal with several unions and would be offering sweeteners, such as a one-off hardship payment of 2,000 rand ($230), to end a strike that has crippled production.

A return to work on Tuesday was one of the conditions attached to the deal.

However, at Amplats' Thembelani mine, hundreds of miners barricaded a road with burning tires, and police said an electricity sub-station at another mine was set alight.

Amplats said it was still working out attendance numbers at its four strike-hit Rustenburg mines. For the past few weeks, fewer than 20 percent of staff have been turning up.

PAYMENT SWEETENERS

The strikes have shone a harsh spotlight on South Africa's persistent income inequality and the promise by Nelson Mandela's African National Congress (ANC) to build "a better life for all" following the end of white-minority rule.

The strikes have also been a major test for Zuma, who faces an ANC leadership election in December.

Even though his handling of the unrest has caused internal party concern, he remains favorite to win re-election, teeing him up for another five years as national president from 2014.

Management threats of mass dismissals, along with pay sweeteners, have ended most of the strikes in the last two weeks, but workers at Thembelani said they were determined to hold out.

Their main demand is for Amplats to match a salary increase of up to 22 percent offered by rival Lonmin after a violent wildcat walkout at its nearby Marikana platinum mine in August.

The Lonmin offer came in the wake of the police killing of 34 miners on August 16, the bloodiest security incident since apartheid. Lonmin said on Tuesday it wanted to raise $800 million via a rights issue to help it recover from the strikes.

MacDonald Motsaathebe, who has been with Amplats for 12 years, said workers did not agree to the deal struck at the weekend between Amplats and unions including the National Union of Mineworkers.

"We didn't agree to the offer. We want 16,000 rand. Lonmin miners got it, and we want it," said the 35-year-old, whose salary supports nine people. "We earn peanuts."

Strikers at gold firms including AngloGold Ashanti and Gold Fields returned to work last week after threats of mass dismissals and an offer of a small pay increase.
