Madonna inks Interscope deal, new album in January (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Madonna inked a deal with Interscope Records that will allow the label run by Jimmy Iovine to release the albums that were originally contracted to Live Nation Entertainment under an ambitious deal that appears to be shrinking in scope.

She plans to release her first album for Interscope next month, first studio album in five years.

A source familiar with the deal's terms said it could be worth between $20 million and $40 million for Madonna and Live Nation combined.

Madonna walked away from a 24-year relationship with Warner Music Group to sign a broad $120 million 10-year deal with Live Nation Entertainment that encompassed touring, ticketing, merchandise, digital assets and three albums.

At the time Live Nation executives had privately predicted its Madonna deal was a sign of a change in the struggling recorded music business that would eventually make traditional music labels irrelevant. It also signed hip-hop artist Jay-Z and rockers Nickelback to similar multi-year so-called '360 degree deals'.

But Live Nation's concert and ticketing business has been hit by the wider economic downturn and sources said the company needs major labels after all to get the marketing and distribution heft required to promote major artists like Madonna and Jay-Z.

Since Live Nation did the deal with Madonna in October 2007 its shares have fallen more than 60 percent. In Feb 2010 it closed its deal to merge with the world's large ticketing company Ticketmaster after a year-long regulatory inquiry.

Madonna is kicking off her Interscope relationship with an album set for release in the last week in January ahead of her upcoming halftime appearance at the Super Bowl on Feb 5. The 53-year old singer also plans to release her new movie 'W.E' on Feb 3.

Encore's Jerry Lewis documentary is must-see for fans (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? It's light on biographical details, but Encore's documentary "Method to the Madness of Jerry Lewis" is a must-see for Lewis fans who want to hear from a who's who of the comedy world about how Lewis inspired them.

Eddie Murphy, who starred in a remake of "The Nutty Professor," is nearly giddy when he talks about Lewis' comedy techniques. Jerry Seinfeld calls Lewis the "diamond of comedy" and says the decision by Lewis and former comedy partner Dean Martin to end their collaboration while they were hot inspired him to end "Seinfeld" in the "moment before, not the moment after."

Celebrities like Carol Burnett, Billy Crystal, Quentin Tarantino, Richard Lewis, Carl Reiner, John Landis and Lewis' pal Richard Belzer also chime in. Burnett says Lewis was sexy -- when he wasn't doing his "Hey, lady!" routine.

The Lewis-produced documentary doesn't go into any detail, or even mention, the star's work with the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Though it ended badly, it remains one of his life's biggest accomplishments, as he helped raise billions of dollars for the charity. And except for Lewis' brief and interesting recollection of joining his parents' stage act as a five-year-old in a tuxedo, details on his early years are also sparse.

But the abundance of testimony to his comic genius is matched with a plethora of clips from his greatest performances, including the classic "Who's Minding the Store?" typewriter scene, a clip Burnett says she could watch on a loop.

"Method to the Madness of Jerry Lewis" premieres Saturday at 8/7c on Encore. To get viewers in a Lewis state of mind, Encore is airing a mini-marathon of his movies before the documentary's premiere, beginning with "The Bellboy" at 1:50 p.m., and including "The Errand Boy," "The Geisha Boy" and "The Ladies Man."

Cool chart: NPD shows the growth of Android and iOS (Digital Trends)

?

npd-us-smartphone-os-marketshare-oct2011

If you follow mobile news at all, you know that the smartphone market is exploding and most of the growth is going to Android and iOS. Every quarter we hear numbers, but today NPD Group (via BGR) released a fascinating chart that shows the market share of all major smartphone OS?s since 2006.

The chart shows the startlingly quick growth of Android, which now holds 53 percent of the US smartphone market as of Oct. 2011. It also shows some of the big losers. It clearly illustrates the fast market share erosion of Palm OS, Windows Mobile, Symbian, and RIM (BlackBerry) in the last six years. Windows Mobile went from 37 percent of the market to only 3 percent, which is now?buoyed?by the 2 percent market share of Windows Phone, which launched in late 2010. RIM went from a 50 percent market share during some quarters of 2006 to an 8-10 percent share through Oct. 2011.

As startling as these numbers are, keep in mind that market share is only half of the picture. Yes, RIM used to dominate and now Android is crushing it, but the smartphone market has grown massively since 2006. So while Windows Mobile used to hold a commanding market share, it did so in a much smaller market. Likewise, RIM may have a 10 percent market share in 2011, but that doesn?t mean its sales have dropped. It?s simply not keeping pace with the growth of its competitors.?

What does 2012 have in store? RIM and Windows Phone face a huge challenge to try and make themselves relevant in a market that seems to have completely replaced them with Android and iOS. HP also just announced that WebOS will become open source. If a few manufacturers latch onto it, could it see a resurgence by this time next year, or will it be missing from the chart entirely?

Dolphins Charity Run Presents Check To UM Cancer Center ? CBS ...

Dolphins Cycling Challenge

Dolphins Cycling Challenge

MIAMI(CBSMiami) ? Not only was it a big day for the Miami Dolphins Sunday at Sun Life Stadium with their win over the Oakland Raiders (34-14), it was also a big day for the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center which received a check for more than a million dollars in a special pregame ceremony.

The money, $1,070,000, was raised by more than 860 bicyclists who took part in the second annual Dolphins Cycling Challenge (DCC) in November 2011. The riders included more than 160 children and 21 cancer survivors.

Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, limited partner Emilio Estefan and CEO Mike Dee presented the check to University of Miami president Donna Shalala and Dean of the UM Miller School of Medicine Pascal Goldschmidt.

?We are very grateful for the incredible support of our fans and friends who rode and for all of those who volunteered, donated or sponsored the challenge,? said Ross in a statement.

?This year?s DCC has been phenomenal, uniting many of us in South Florida toward the common goal of fighting cancer,? said Shalala. ?We are honored to be partners with the Miami Dolphins for this annual event.?

The tri-county bicycle ride was created by the Miami Dolphins in 2010 in honor of former Dolphin Jim ?Mad Dog? Mandich who lost his battle with cancer in 2010 . The two-day event featured six different bicycle rides from 30 to 170 miles that went through 37 cities in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Last year?s inaugural ride had 311 adult riders, 100 kids and raised $533,000.
