Japan mows down Panama to reach int'l final

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) -- The Little Leaguers from Japan are playing textbook baseball.

Strong pitching, solid defense and powerful bats have carried the team from Tokyo to a berth in the international final at the World Series following a 4-1 victory over Panama on Wednesday.

Kotaro Kiyomiya homered in the first, and starter Ryuji Osada struck out seven.

The left-handed Kiyomiya displayed prodigious power for a 13-year-old slugger. His blast landed nearly halfway up the hill beyond the right-field wall, about 310 feet from the plate.

"As soon as I hit it I knew it was a home run," he said through an interpreter. "That's why I didn't take off quickly."

Panama finally got on the board in the fifth after Edwin Nieto hustled around first to score on a double by Daniel Cruz and an error.

But Osada got the next batter to ground weakly to short to end the threat.

Texas and Tennessee play the nightcap in the U.S. bracket.

On the international side, Japan is a traditional power, having appeared in the World Series finals four out of the previous five years, including a title in 2010.

Now, Tokyo is two wins away from taking home another title to Japan. Noriatsu Osaka retired the side in order in the sixth for the save.

The two teams then lined up for the customary postgame high-fives at the plate before Japan's players sprinted out to center to pay homage to the bust of Howard Lamade just beyond the outfield wall - another Japan tradition at the World Series. The main Little League stadium is named after Lamade.

Japan pounded out eight hits but squandered a couple other scoring opportunities. Despite the first-inning homers, manager Yoichi Kubo thinks his boys aren't swinging the bats well.

"We have not adjusted to this big stage" at the plate, Kobo said. "Our pitching has been very good."

The Panama team from Aguadulce moves into the elimination bracket to play Mexico on Thursday, with the winner of that game facing Japan in the international championship game on Saturday.

It's time for Panama manager Luis Gonzalez to settle his players down.

"We will have a team meeting to get them to relax because we have to ready to play another game," Gonzalez said through an interpreter.

While they struggled at the plate, Panama pitching settled down after the rough first. Kiyomiya's homer to right was nearly caught by a fan watching the game from a beach chair carefully perched on the steep hill; Shun Oshima followed with a solo shot to right two batters later.

Twelve-year-old reliever James Gonzalez got a strikeout to end a bases-loaded jam the next inning before Panama. He allowed a run and two hits in three innings, benefiting from some nifty glove work like 13-year-old shortstop Daniel Cruz's diving stop to his right and Edisson Gonzalez's sweep tag at first to end the bottom of the fourth.

Panama pitchers were often serenaded to chants of "Strike him out" in Spanish by their fans, who were yelling the phrase when Oshima tripled down the left-field line to tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth.

Incorporate Your company for Long-Term Rewards | Contacts ...

If you are contemplating turning your little business into a corporation, you?ll find certain advantages to anticipate when it comes to taxes, liability, and organization operations. Though incorporation isn?t the answer for every single enterprise, it is great to become acquainted with the benefits from the commence so you can maximize your company?s potential for future growth.

Incorporate Your business for Feasible Tax Benefits

Tax benefits are the main reason numerous businesses make a decision to incorporate. A corporation enables you to accumulate your wealth and assets with particular tax rates meant for corporations. These rates are a little lower than tax rates for people. Also, when you own a tiny organization and tend not to incorporate the organization, you should spend self-employment taxes (such as social safety tax) along with normal revenue tax, either quarterly or in a single lump sum. Operating as a corporation allows you to setup a payroll structure related to working for somebody else, where these taxes are taken out of your paycheck tiny by tiny on a regular basis.

Corporations are capable to deduct a lot of operating expenses without restriction. They?re able to also split earnings with shareholders, a method that frequently lowers the general tax bracket for the corporation. The term for this is known as ?shifting.? Corporations are also much less susceptible to IRS audits whereas sole proprietors are targeted often for audits.

Corporation Positive aspects for Staff

Once you incorporate your business, you could get tax-free rewards as an employee such as medical insurance, life insurance, a retirement program, education, work-related travel, and client or employee entertainment. Most states permit for these benefits even if your corporation only has 1 employee.

Liability is one more significant benefit of forming a corporation. Simply because a corporation can be a legal entity of its personal, it?s comparable to particular person, which indicates it could be sued or sue yet another. The shareholders aren?t held accountable for the corporation?s obligations and debts. In a sole proprietorship or partnership, you could lose everything you?ve got (like your property and individual assets) if a lawsuit is filed against your firm.

Corporations Reside On

After you?ve retired or passed on, your corporation will still exist for another to continue the organization. This is possible due to the fact a corporation doesn?t rely on 1 or two persons to become an operating organization. It is a separate legal entity that can be operated by a group of shareholders and board of directors.

Economic Benefits

Once you incorporate, you give your organization the ability to grow financially. It is considerably simpler to raise income to get a corporation, and shareholders might help make issues attainable that you just as a person cannot achieve on your own. The business will have more opportunity to grow and turn out to be a terrific success as a corporation.

Even when thinking about all the advantages of incorporating, you could nevertheless be hesitant about this choice. Forming an LLC (Limited-Liability Business) is another option. Once you type an LLC, you?re creating a legal entity for your business just as using a corporation. McManus: Mitt Romney or Barack Obama - Gridlock no matter who's elected president

Photo credit: AP | Former Massachusetts governor and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, left, and President Barack Obama.

There are plenty of things not to like about this year's presidential campaign, including how nasty and negative a mud fight it's become, with both sides engaging in shameless distortion.

But here's the worst thing about this presidential campaign: No matter what happens on Election Day, there's little hope of a good outcome.

For most of the last four years, Washington has been mired in political gridlock, deadlocked between Republicans who want to slash government and keep taxes low and Democrats who are willing to trim government a bit but also want to raise taxes on the affluent.

That deadlock has sent us careening toward one fiscal cliff after another. It has made it virtually impossible for Congress to do anything more ambitious than writing short-term spending bills that merely kick the can down the road.

One purpose of elections is to break that kind of deadlock and send politicians a message about what direction voters want them to go. That's what happened in 2008, when President Barack Obama won a mandate to pursue his vision of an activist government -- and again in 2010, when voters decided that Obama had gone too far and handed the House of Representatives to Republicans.

But this year? It's unlikely voters will deliver a clear message.

The presidential polls have been balanced around the 50 percent mark for months. Strategists in both parties say the outcome is likely to be a squeaker. The morning after Election Day, the winner, whoever he is, will declare that voters have given him a ringing mandate to do whatever he promised -- but it won't be true. Polls show that on most of the major issues the candidates are arguing about -- tax rates, the size of government, the repeal of Obama's health care plan -- the public is divided.

Even worse, Congress is likely to remain deadlocked as well. The most recent forecast by Charlie Cook, the dean of congressional election soothsayers, suggests that the Senate will end up around 50-50, too close for either party to control with ease.

In the House of Representatives, Cook projects that Democrats could gain as many as eight seats, but that's far short of the 25 they need to take control away from Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio).

In the absence of a clear-cut victory for either side, we face two possible scenarios.

In one outcome, Obama narrowly wins re-election and spends at least two years wrestling with truculent conservatives in the House, who will be determined to stand in his way as never before.

In the other, Mitt Romney narrowly wins election and spends at least two years wrestling with truculent conservatives in the House, who will interpret his election as a popular mandate for a "tea party" program whether it is or not. He could have a Democratic Senate to wrestle with as well.

The almost inevitable result? More gridlock. Neither Obama nor Romney has much of a track record negotiating with wily legislators.

Obama tried to work out a fiscal "grand bargain" with Boehner last year, but the effort collapsed in a flurry of finger-pointing that made both men look weak.

Romney's single term as governor of Massachusetts produced one major piece of legislation, his 2006 health care law, but he has since renounced that kind of bipartisanship. Many of his other proposals went nowhere because he had a chief executive's aversion to bargaining with the state legislature, according to "The Real Romney," a biography by Boston Globe reporters Michael Kranish and Scott Helman.

Could anything change these doleful projections? If either party wins a landslide and a genuine mandate, sure. Or if Obama emerges from the campaign with a new set of Clintonesque negotiating skills. Or if the militants of the tea party are chastened by a narrow Republican presidential win and a loss in the Senate. But none of those things seems likely -- especially a chastened tea party.

Polls show that most voters don't want a rigidly ideological government of either left or right; they want practical problem-solving somewhere in the center, even if they aren't sure where that center should be. When the Pew Research Center asked voters this year if they wanted "political leaders who are willing to make compromises to get the job done," a whopping 80 percent said yes -- including 68 percent of Republicans.

But the rules of American politics are stacked against centrists and compromisers these days. Obama won in 2008 partly by promising a post-partisan agenda, but his own liberal instincts and the opposition of Republicans got in the way; he's not making that promise anymore. And Romney never made it.

In a discussion among voters sponsored by the Annenberg Public Policy Center this month, a group of suburban Milwaukee women -- one of the potential swing groups in this election -- sounded disappointed in both presidential candidates and in the political system as a whole.

"In 2008, I was real into it, but this year I'm not really into it," said Michelle Wilke, 38, an electrical assembly worker who was laid off from her job at Harley-Davidson in 2009. "I just have a feeling that no matter what happens, it's not going to change." She's probably right.

THE RACE: A Dem storm, too, during GOP convention?

While high winds and rain could disrupt next week's Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., Democrats will try to manufacture some of their own thunder by campaigning through it.

It's a contrast to bygone days when one party's candidates would lie low during the other's convention.

Meteorologists and Republican leaders were anxiously eyeing Tropical Storm Isaac as it churned through the Caribbean Thursday heading toward Cuba. If it strengthens and tracks northwest, it could threaten Florida's Gulf Coast by Monday.

Mitt Romney and running mate Paul Ryan were doing some final pre-convention campaigning in battleground states.

Romney stumped in New Mexico, and Ryan told a business roundtable in Fayetteville, N.C., that the two would work if elected to block threatened military cuts.

"Don't question our resolve," Ryan said.

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden remained in Washington with no scheduled campaign events. But Obama will campaign next Tuesday and Wednesday in Iowa, Colorado and Virginia.

Biden will be in Florida Monday and Tuesday, including a Tampa stop. Michelle Obama will appear on David Letterman's CBS show Wednesday night.

The Democratic campaign also is airing a TV ad starring former President Bill Clinton. And Obama Thursday sent supporters an email soliciting at least $5, noting "75 days from now, I'll either be looking at another four years in the White House ? or the end of this opportunity."

While Florida is frequently hit by hurricanes and is a major convention destination, it's been 40 years since either party held a nominating convention there. In the summer of 1972, both did ? in Miami Beach.

Republicans renominated President Richard Nixon and Vice President Spiro Agnew, while Democrats picked George McGovern and Thomas Eagleton.

Despite political storms later that year, neither convention was threatened by a hurricane.

Catherine Ensley's Words World and Wings: Writing Update

Wheat Harvest 2012

We?re smack dab in the middle of harvest, which generally takes about three weeks for us to complete. ?I?m not impacted as much by it now as I was in years past. Now, I do little more than cook dinner each night for three hungry harvesters when they come in at anywhere from 8:30-9:30 pm.

As for what I?ve been doing apart from that, it took me a full three weeks after leaving my job at the library to finally complete all the errands and loose ends that were preventing me from launching fully into my writing.

But I am happy to say that as of this week, while the family is putting long days in the field, I?ve been at home, writing, in a mostly quiet house. ?

In addition to replacing all of our windows and siding, we had our heating/air conditioning system replaced recently. Men are still here practically every day doing this and that. Who would?ve guessed it would be so complex, and take so many trips out to our house on their parts?

And that?s just the heating/air conditioning technicians. First, they had to install the exterior unit, the heat pump. Then the interior unit, the back-up electric furnace.

?It turned out it was beyond their expertise to complete the job, and so they had to subcontract an electrician to do some wiring. Before the electrician came out, the heating people made two more trips to the house. One was to install a U-V light bulb that behaves like an electronic air filter. Another was to determine why our newly installed air conditioning unit wasn?t working. They determined it had tripped the circuit breaker.

Today, the electrician came out to wire up the electric furnace and discovered a new batch of troubles.

Our house was built in 1979, and there are some things near our electrical panel, namely a sink and a nice stretch of cabinets with new countertops, that won?t pass code. Our choice is to rip out about 15? of cabinets (which would also mess up our 3-years new basement flooring), or have the electricians drill through 6? of concrete and relocate our electrical panels outdoors. Then when a circuit breaks, we?ll have to go outside to trip it. Won?t that be fun in the snow?

Hubbie will not be pleased when he learns our choices. But I?ve already talked to my son-in-law who remodels kitchens and bathrooms for a living, and he estimated it would probably cost about as much to have the electricians relocate our electrical panel as it would for us to have him rip out the sink, cabinets and countertops and leave an ugly, unfinished space, just to comply with Washington?s ?insane? electrical codes. And ultimately, it would ruin the pretty basement we worked so hard in the past few years to create into a livable apartment, where two people are currently living.

So apart from writing, these are the issues I?ve been contending with this week, my first peaceful week at home since retiring, when I have actually had time to work? on my writing, assuming I?m not talking to various builders. ?

Regarding writing, I have decided to rework my Young Adult manuscript instead of launching into my inspirational historical romance. I have been studying Dramatica theory for several months, and I wanted to see how what I had done squared with what the Dramatica software suggested I do in terms of plotting.

Frankly, the manuscript is an enormous mess!? But I am so happy for my new understanding of how to successfully plot this particular story, which means keeping it on target. I have an awful tendency to go off on tangents.

?It will be a joy to truly understand what I am doing for a change, and not spend weeks, months, maybe years, flailing in the dark with it. Maybe never really coming to understand how it should roll out. Had I not studied Dramatica, I am sure I would not have ?gotten it.?

Hours spent re-plotting my manuscript from Monday-Wednesday: 26.

Gee, it?s good to be back on the job. Had I been working at the library, it would?ve been 24, and none of those hours would?ve been spent occupying my mind with the things I want it to be occupied with.

I?m feeling no regrets about leaving the old job and taking on the new one.

T-mobile gets throttle-free unlimited data plans Sept. 5

1 hr.

We often complain that "unlimited" data plans always seem to have a catch, be it hidden limits, speed throttling or a combination of the two. But T-Mobile's trying to eliminate all those silly things by offering what appear to be a?truly unlimited data plan to its customers, starting on Sept. 5.

The new plan, appropriately labeled "Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data," will cost?$20/month if added to a?"value" plan or $30/month with a "classic" plan. (Whether you have a "value" or "classic" plan appears to depend on whether you paid a full or subsidized price for your mobile device.) This means that you could snag a plan with voice, texting, and unlimited data for as low as $70 or $90, depending on your situation.

So, again, what's the catch??Well,?you won't be grabbing that all-time favorite data-gobbling device, the iPhone, on T-Mobile anytime soon, for example. And the carrier only offers HSPA+ data speeds (which, in real-world testing, have proven?inferior to brisk 4G LTE speeds).

It's also worth noting that hotspot capabilities are not available with the unlimited plan, unfortunately, so you have to use all of that unthrottled data on your phone, and can't connect a laptop.?As a result, T-Mobile's other (more limited) data plans will continue to co-exist with the new one. With them, you can turn your mobile device into a hotspot for your other gadgets,?but you'll have to deal with?speed throttling at certain usage levels.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.
