Hot tea can be idea for cold days. Cooling you off in the summer is done with cold tea or it is used in combination with a meal. There have even been reports recently that drinking tea offers a variety of health benefits including fighting cancer and other diseases. Drinking tea is more than providing a refreshment. Roots of Afternoon Tea

Serving as a traditional aspect, drinking tea was a British and Victorian culture dating back to the 1600?s. The Distinction between Afternoon Tea and High Tea

Those belonging to England?s working class were not accustomed to snacking or small meals with tea and other items. They were at their jobs until late in the evening or out working on the farms. With all the work, they still made time for tea. Tea was served in the late evening and known as high tea.

The Principal meal of the day was high tea. At sunset, high tea is served as a large meal. A variety of foods including sandwiches, fish, eggs and other meats are served during high tea. High is another word for principal in the working class homes. High tea was a larger meal presented at a days end.

A Living Tradition

Homeowner?s do not take part of afternoon tea as often as many hotels and restaurants. The United Kingdom follows tradition for the amusement of its tourists. Biscuits and cookies compliment afternoon tea. The practice is similar to the American coffee break.

A few American hotels take part in afternoon tea. Many people have instilled afternoon tea into their traditions.
