An early prototype of the iPad with a surprising design quirk has sold for just?over $10,000 on eBay. The device features two dock connection ports, something that was rumored for the iPad 2. Unfortunately, the novelty of the two ports will be somewhat dampened by the fact that this iPad only runs a testing platform called Switchboard instead of iOS.
As the seller describes it:
This is one of a VERY small amount of Apple prototype devices and you rarely see these on ebay. This iPad has 16GBs of capacity, and is incredibly unique?...?Apple prototyped these iPads to have this connector late in the process and at the last minute decided to remove them. There are patent drawings and leaked casings that show the indents for both dock connector holes, but this unit has both dock connectors, and both are full functional for charging this iPad and connecting it to your computer.
There were certainly rumors to the effect that a new iPad would have two ports, and as the seller notes there were actually leaked cases and drawings that showed this design. This particular iPad, however, is the first actual device to show up with the ports intact.
Whether Apple indeed intended to include both ports up until "the last minute" is anyone's guess, though it seems unlikely that Steve Jobs and Jonathan Ive, both decisive and minimalistic in their design tendencies, would allow such an ambiguity into a shipping product.
It is, however, possible and even likely that the decision of which side the dock would be on was left until the last minute, as the device is equally usable in both landscape and portrait modes. They settled?on portrait as the primary orientation, clearly, mirroring the iPhone and differentiating the iPad from widescreen monitors and TVs.
Interestingly, as a commenter points out at MacRumours, which found the listing, the circuitry necessary for the second dock connector is still present in normal iPads, though there is no hole in the case through which it can be accessed.
The real question, of course, is how did this device get out of Apple's labs in the first place? The seller tells Wired: "Judging by how Apple works, it?s most likely stolen, but I?m not sure about that...?I can?t give much information about the Apple device without revealing who specifically I am." That may put this auction in questionable legal territory.
Regardless, the package is already in the open, in transit?to the US-based buyer. Apple may try to track it down, but this cat is already out of the bag.

This real estate agent is in NY. They have lied about conditions in the house, they have lied about telling the seller that things need to be done before closing, and they have yelled at me and insulted me saying that I am young and I ask too many questions. I have basically had to do everything myself and they treat me in a way that they would never treat anyone else of a older age. Who do I contact?

France typically hasn't been kind to Google. Today, though, it's cutting some important slack. A court has ruled that the search firm can't be held liable when YouTube members upload clips of their favorite football matches or movies from local network TF1. As in a case involving Dailymotion last year, the judge saw YouTube as just the host for others' videos rather than having any hand in producing the content itself. Not only does the decision let Google off the hook for a possible €141 million ($177 million) fine, it prevents the company from having to pre-screen every video that might be visible in France -- a difficult challenge for a company that takes 72 hours of new video every minute. Google is still facing less-than-cordial attitudes towards its copyright enforcement in other countries, including a zombie Viacom lawsuit in the US, but it now has some extra ammunition if it wants to cite a precedent.

Do you really think a black FM radio -- or even worse, one in an off-season shade of grape --- can get you through the summer? Radio maker Pure wants to correct your errant ways. The company is expanding its Evoke Mio radio line with six new "on-trend" color options. The radio is already available in black, teal, grape and cherry, and now Pure is adding pepper, mustard, paprika, sage, rose and seagrass shades. While the colors are new, the specs are the same as on the original model: there's digital and FM radio, space for 30 presets, an auxiliary input for a PMP and an auto-dimming OLED panel. The new Pure Evoke Mio collection will go on sale in June for £130 (it's unclear if the radios will head stateside as well).
With so many technological changes, advances, and necessities, it can be easy to forget where we come from and what we are trying to accomplish. On countless occasions, I catch myself staring blankly at the computer screen screen when I?m trying to write a business email, asking myself:
Where should I start
What should I write?
How should I write it?
Sometimes I just want to scribble something quick and be done with it, but then I think about what I am doing. I?m not just texting somebody; I?m corresponding. Making a post or sending an email is a type of formal communication, especially in a professional or educational setting. I am sending an electronic letter. So how would I send a letter if I were doing it the old-fashioned way (picture a bottle of ink, a quill, and parchment with fancy cursive writing)?
Address the Recipient Respect and professionalism are immediately apparent in an email or post that properly addresses the person on the receiving end (i.e. a simple Hi, Hello, or Dear that is followed by the person?s name or standing).
Grammar Using professional and appropriate grammar is essential in professional writing. Not only does it convey that you respect the recipient, but it represents you as a current or prospective professional. It is easy to revert to a quick texting format, especially in a hurry, but don?t let yourself get caught in this trap. Be sure to:
Capitalize
Use full sentences
Use concise paragraphs
Avoid too many bolded or italicized words
Check your spelling
A Good Sign Off When I watch a film or read a book, the ending is always the part that sticks with me the most. The same is true for emails and blackboard posts. Try to leave your recipient with something positive, and use a personal sign off before your name (i.e. Sincerely, Best Wishes, Best, Warm Regards, Regards, Thank you).

A rust-encrusted Harley-Davidson motorcycle that was swept away by the Japan tsunami in March 2011 was found by Peter Mark in April, washed up on an island off the coast of British Columbia. It's now headed to a Harley museum.
By James Eng, msnbc.com
A Japanese man?s Harley-Davidson motorcycle that washed up on the shores of western Canada more than a year after it was swept away by the devastating tsunami will be preserved in a Harley museum in the U.S.
The 2004 FXSTB Softail Night Train motorcycle will be permanently housed in the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, Wis., as a memorial to the victims of the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, which swamped several coastal towns in northeastern Japan and left more than 15,000 people dead.
?It is truly amazing that my Harley-Davidson motorcycle was recovered in Canada after drifting for more than a year,? said the bike?s owner, Ikuo Yokoyama, in a press release issued Friday by Deeley Harley-Davidson, the Canadian distributor of Harleys. ?I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt appreciation to Peter Mark, the finder of my motorcycle. Due to circumstances caused by the disaster, I have been so far unable to visit him in Canada to convey my gratitude.?
Mark found the motorcycle, still bearing its Japanese license plate, while driving his ATV on an isolated beach on Graham Island on the west coast of British Columbia on April 18. The bike, along with several other items, was inside a rusted cargo van container that apparently drifted more than 4,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean.
?You just never know what you?re going to stumble upon when you go for a drive, and lo and behold you just come across something that?s out of this world,? Mark told CBC at the time.
The motorcycle was eventually traced to the 29-year-old Yokoyama.
The tsunami destroyed Yokoyama?s home in Miyagi prefecture and also claimed the lives of three family members, according to Japanese media reports. Yokoyama currently lives in temporary housing in Miyagi prefecture.
He said the motorcycle was being kept in a storage container behind his house when the tsunami struck.
Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada
The Harley will soon be transported to the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee.
Harley-Davidson offered to return the rust-encrusted bike to him and to restore it to running condition but Yokoyama respectfully declined, the company said.
?Since the motorcycle was recovered, I have discussed with many people about what to do with it. I would be delighted if it could be preserved in its current condition and exhibited to the many visitors to the Harley Davidson Museum as a memorial to a tragedy that claimed thousands of lives,? Yokoyama was quoted as saying in Friday?s press release.
Harley-Davidson has offered to fly him to visit the museum and meet Marks, the Canadian who retrieved the bike. Yokoyama said he would like to do so ?when things have calmed down.?
?My heart really goes out to Ikuo Yokoyama and all the survivors of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami for everything that was taken from them. I cannot even begin to comprehend the loss of family, friends, and community,? Mark was quoted by Harley-Davidson as saying. ?I think it is fitting that the Harley, which was swept across the Pacific Ocean by the tsunami, will end up in the Harley-Davidson Museum as a memorial to that tragic event. It has an interesting and powerful story to convey preserved in its current state.?
The motorcycle has since been transferred to a Harley dealership in Vancouver. Plans for its transportation to the Harley museum are being developed.

Facebook's rocky initial public offering hasn't stopped life at the world's biggest online social network. On Thursday, the company unveiled a camera app for the iPhone.
The app can be downloaded from Apple's App Store and works like most other camera applications for smart phones.?
To take a photo, you tap a camera icon in the upper left corner of your screen, aim and shoot. You can then add filters, crop or tilt your photo, and share it on Facebook.?
The new app is similar to Instagram, the photo-sharing app Facebook is in the process of buying for $1 billion. The acquisition, however, has not yet been completed, and Instagram's employees did not work on the photo app. Facebook has said it expects the Instagram acquisition to close sometime this year.
Facebook didn't give details on when it might release a version of the app for phones that run on Google's Android operating system. In a statement, Facebook said it is "carefully looking at what might make for a good Facebook photos experience across Android devices."?

Ed McLaughlin
All Chico E-R photos are available here.

CHICO ? Few formal programs have been as successful at creating decision-makers for Chico as Ed McLaughlin, who died Thursday morning.
McLaughlin was widely known as "the bike guy," executive director of Chico Velo bike organization, and cycling advocate until he was involved in a cycling accident that left him paralyzed.
As friends and acquaintances talked about McLaughlin on Thursday, his ability to advocate for cycling, advocate for Chico and convince individuals they could do the most good in elected office surfaced strongly.
At least four current and former city officials said they sought office because of encouragement from McLaughlin.
"He's responsible for me being mayor," said Ann Schwab on Thursday morning.
An avid cyclist and co-owner of a downtown Chico bike shop, Schwab was a good friend of McLaughlin's, saying he had encouraged her to run for City Council.
Schwab said she saw McLaughlin on Tuesday, visiting him in the hospital after he fell out of bed last week. She did not know the cause of his death.
A family email forwarded to the Enterprise-Record said he had come home from the hospital on Wednesday and died early Thursday morning. He was having breathing difficulties.
"These last six months he was the most active he had been since the accident. He was getting around town, and becoming very active with emails," Schwab said.
A freak accident in 2007 left McLaughlin paralyzed. He was riding with a group of other cyclists
through Bidwell Park and smashed into a bollard that was obscured by the group, which pressed together to avoid a pedestrian.
The fork of his cycle broke and he fell to the front, injuring his spine.
He spent months in a Bay Area hospital renowned for its back care before returning to Chico. In a wheelchair, he continued his advocacy for cycling, including serving as chair of the city's Bicycle Advisory Committee, which started in the mid-90s.
"He was the only chair," said Schwab. "He always said the best way to make change is to advocate."
Bike shop owner Steve O'Bryan of Pullins Cyclery said his civic involvement, first in the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission, was prompted by McLaughlin. He also served on the Chico Planning Commission, the Chico Unified School District board and is vice chair of the Bicycle Advisory Committee, which meets as needed.
O'Bryan remembers a post-election conversation about how many chamber-supported candidates won office, when a high Chico official commented on the more wide-spread success of Chico Velo-supported candidates.
"What Ed did was low key, steady and gradually influencing the powers that be, while seeking the funding that got projects done," O'Bryan said, noting McLaughlin refused to ask for city funding when other organizations did.
O'Bryan said most of the bike facilities around town bear McLaughlin's mark.
"Every time you take a bike ride, push a button at a stop or be on a separated bike path, or one with a stripe on the ground, the Mangrove Avenue bike tunnel ... know that Ed was heavily involved in that.
"He was the keystone."
McLaughlin was an ambassador for Chico as well, especially among the national cycling arena. He was involved in calling Bicycle magazine's attention to Chico, which in 1998 named it the best cycling community in the U.S. Other cycling organizations and publications also acknowledged Chico because of McLaughlin's efforts.
"It was Ed who first got me involved in governance," said Chico State University engineering professor Russ Mills, "first with the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission and then with the Chico State academic senate."
Mills knew McLaughlin for 25 years.
"He wasn't just an advocate for bicyclists, he was an advocate for life. Even after his tragic injury, Ed was still enthusiastic and connected."
After the accident, friends of McLaughlin created the Tour de Ed bike ride as a fundraiser for helping him with care costs, but it was broadened to help any injured cyclist through the nonprofit Chico Cyclists Care Fund created after the first ride.
Friends also remember his wry sense of humor, borne out in costumes he would wear to the Tour de Ed bike event, including an ape, pope and cowboy outfits.
"I don't know what the significance of those costumes were," said Schwab, "but that was Ed."
From New Jersey, he also had a "New Jersey kind of attitude," O'Bryan said.
Before the accident, McLaughlin had been the executive director of Chico Velo cycling advocacy organization, weighing in on community plans and developments with an eye to the cycling community. He often volunteered for community planning processes, speaking for the cycling community.
He operated a bicycle delivery service and boasted that he didn't own a car.
"He had vision to see things," said O'Bryan, who said he met McLaughlin soon after he moved to Chico from Eureka. He worked at the Social Security office and would come into Chico Bicycle, where O'Bryan worked.
"He was overweight and smoked. Someone told him he'd better change his lifestyle so he got into bicycling."
McLaughlin was involved in expanding the Wildflower Century bike ride, O'Bryan said, which was also noted as one of the country's best 100-mile rides. This year, the ride, which occurred in April, had to be limited to 4,000 riders, who came from throughout the country.
In 2004, the League of American Bicyclists named Chico one of six bicycle-friendly communities, and McLaughlin was working on increasing Chico's status with that organization.
He was also an ardent letter writer to the Enterprise-Record, pointing out community issues on cycling, access and other matters that he felt needed to be addressed.
"What I appreciated most was his outlook on life, and his phrases, like he'd say you should examine your career, or what you were doing on a daily basis, then ask 'Are you in a rut or in a groove'," Schwab said.
"Hopefully he's on a good bike ride right now," said O'Bryan.
"Don't be sad for Ed; be sad for us."

Tonight is Round 2 of Bryce Harper vs. Cole Hamels as the Nationals and Phillies square off in Philadelphia, but both sides are trying their best to downplay the situation that resulted in endless headlines and a suspension for Hamels the first time they met.
Hamels has declined to comment other than to now claim that his hitting Harper on May 6 was actually unintentional?sorry Cole, that ship has long since sailed?and Harper told Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post that he doesn?t expect another incident:
I don?t even think about that. It?s a new series, a new day. I have a lot of respect for everybody in that other dugout. They?re an All-Star team ? guys who are All-Stars who have been in this league for a long time.
Earlier this week Harper also praised Phillies fans while joking about their battery-throwing past and Philadelphia added extra ballpark security in the outfield to avoid any issues, so on paper at least Round 2 might end up being just another matchup between one of baseball?s best left-handers and one of baseball?s best young hitters.
Assuming, of course, that no one feels the sudden urge to be ?old school.?
Unlike other mammals, humans don?t make new olfactory neurons, a study suggests
Web edition : 4:15 pm
People may be born with all the smell-sensing brain cells they will ever have, a new study concludes.
That makes human brains different from those of rodents, nonhuman primates and other mammals, which constantly make new nerve cells, or neurons, in the odor-processing olfactory bulb. Humans don?t rely on the sense of smell as much as other animals do, so maybe it isn?t surprising that people don?t make new odor-sensing cells, says study author Jonas Fris?n, a neuroscientist at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.
Neurons are born in two areas: a memory-and-learning center called the hippocampus and the subventricular zone, which surrounds the two vacant spaces in the middle of the brain. In mice, neurons from the subventricular zone migrate to the olfactory bulb and wire into neural circuits, helping the animals learn new smells.
Some evidence exists already that humans also repopulate their hippocampus with new neurons, but data have been less clear for olfactory neurons. Now, Fris?n and colleagues have used the steady decline of radiocarbon produced in 20th century nuclear tests to determine the birth dates of brain cells. The results, published in the May 24 Neuron, show that few if any olfactory neurons are created after a person?s birth.
A very small number of neurons may still be born and incorporated in the olfactory bulb, but may not be enough to matter. The researchers calculate that olfactory neurons are replaced at a rate of less than 1 percent per century in humans, compared with about 50 percent annually in rodents.
The new study may help clear up controversy surrounding neuron regeneration in the olfactory system, says Fred Gage, a neuroscientist at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Calif.
But the research can?t be definitive in determining that neuron regeneration never takes place in the human olfactory system, says Jeffrey Macklis, a neuroscientist and developmental biologist at Harvard University. The method can detect only cells that have wired into the brain. Cells that are born but die without being incorporated into the brain would go undetected.
Studies in Macklis? lab and others have demonstrated that new olfactory neurons in mouse brains will die if the mouse isn?t exposed to new smells. It could be that new olfactory neurons are created, but don?t stick around long if humans aren?t constantly exposed to new odors.
If the researchers were to study the brains of people such as perfumers, vintners, sommeliers and chefs who use their sense of smell professionally and often encounter new scents, the result might be different, Macklis says.
Many of the people in the study had psychiatric disorders or were substance abusers. Those types of brain disorders are known to reduce the amount of neuron regeneration.
HOUSTON?? A Texas man convicted of trying to sneak out of the U.S. to give al-Qaida restricted military documents, GPS equipment and money was sentenced on Thursday to 20 years in prison ? the maximum punishment he could receive.
Barry Walter Bujol Jr. was also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine during his sentencing hearing before U.S. District Judge David Hittner.

"We do not take matters of potential national security lightly," U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson said in a statement. "This case and its successful resolution represents our commitment to making our communities a safer place to live."
Before his sentence was handed down, Bujol told Hittner he never wanted to hurt anyone. He also said prosecutors were wrong in portraying him as a terrorist.
Pakistan jails doctor who helped CIA find bin Laden
"I'm a person, not a terrorist," he said in a brief statement, adding that he had made some mistakes.
Bujol's attorney, Daphne Silverman, had asked for a sentence of seven years, telling Hittner that her client was not dangerous.
"He's an incredibly strong and peaceful person," she said.
But prosecutor Stephen McIntyre told Hittner that Bujol, in coded messages sent to people he believed were members of al-Qaida, advocated the destruction of U.S. drones and the murder of American soldiers.
"The defendant talked about his desire to live and die with the brothers (members of al-Qaida)," McIntyre said.
Hittner sentenced Bujol to 15 years for the charge related to trying to provide help to a terrorist group and five years for identity theft. The judge ordered the sentences be served consecutively.
Prosecutors said Bujol, a U.S. citizen, sought to join al-Qaida and provide it with money, two nonpublic restricted-access Army manuals related to U.S. drones and GPS equipment. He was arrested in May 2010 following a two-year investigation after he used fake identification to sneak into a Houston port and board a ship bound for the Middle East.
The 31-year-old said he never intended to harm the United States or any American citizens, and that he had wanted to leave the country because he was displeased with U.S. foreign policy, particularly drone attacks. He said he wanted to become a better Muslim.
"We are using drones to murder and attack people," Silverman told Hittner. "It was a valid position (Bujol) was taking ... to disapprove of drones. That's what his concern was, defending people and not hurting people."
Authorities used an undercover informant who befriended Bujol and, posing as a recruiter for al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, offered to help him travel to the Middle East. The informant wasn't a law enforcement agent.
Authorities said Bujol made three unsuccessful attempts in 2009 to travel to the Middle East.
Prosecutors also alleged Bujol exchanged emails with the U.S.-born cleric, Anwar al-Awlaki, who had ties to al-Qaida.
Al-Awlaki, killed by a U.S. drone strike in September in Yemen, is also believed to have exchanged emails with Maj. Nidal Hasan, the Army psychiatrist charged in the killing of 13 people in the November 2009 shootings at Fort Hood in Texas.
Silverman said Bujol had a very brief email exchange with al-Awlaki, but that was before the cleric was known to have ties to terrorism and Bujol only sought spiritual advice. She also said the informant led Bujol astray.
According to court documents, Bujol used at least 14 email addresses to hide his activities from authorities, and he advocated attacking U.S. facilities where military weapons were manufactured.
Bujol, who lived in Hempstead, about 50 miles northwest of Houston, was a student at nearby Prairie View A&M University.
Tariq Ahmed, an attorney with the Muslim Civil Liberties Union, which also worked on Bujol's case, said many Muslims in Houston were afraid to speak out on Bujol's behalf because they didn't want to be associated with a terror-related case.

Contact: Linda Brooks lbrooks@rsna.org 630-590-7762 Radiological Society of North America
OAK BROOK, Ill. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides an indication of a breast tumor's response to pre-surgical chemotherapy significantly earlier than possible through clinical examination, according to a new study published online in the journal Radiology.
Women with breast cancer often undergo chemotherapy prior to surgery. Research has shown that women who receive this treatment, known as neoadjuvant chemotherapy, are more likely to achieve breast conservation than those receiving chemotherapy after surgery.
Clinicians track a patient's response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy through clinical measurements of the tumor's size and location. Contrast-enhanced MRI offers a promising alternative to the clinical approach through its ability to detect blood vessel formation in tumors, known as angiogenesis. Angiogenesis is an earlier and more accurate marker of tumor response.
"MRI was better than the clinical approach for predicting which patients would go on to have complete tumor response," said Nola M. Hylton, Ph.D., professor of radiology and biomedical imaging at the University of California in San Francisco. "It gave us great information on early response to treatment."
For the study, researchers analyzed data from ACRIN 6657, the imaging component of the multicenter Investigation of Serial Studies to Predict Your Therapeutic Response with Imaging And moLecular Analysis (I-SPY TRIAL) breast cancer trial.
They compared MRI and clinical assessment in 216 female patients ranging in age from 26 to 68 years undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy for stage II or III breast cancer. MRI sessions were performed before, during and after administration of a chemotherapy regimen. The researchers correlated imaging results with subsequent laboratory analysis of surgical samples.
MRI size measurements were superior to clinical examination at all time points, with tumor volume change showing the greatest relative benefit at the second MRI exam. MRI was better than clinical assessment in predicting both complete tumor response and residual cancer burden.
The study shows how imaging can play a vital role in characterizing a tumor and monitoring treatment response.
"What we see on imaging helps us define not just the size of the tumor but its biological activity," Dr. Hylton said. "We can observe if the signal increases after contrast injection, and interpret that increase as angiogenic activity. We can also use water diffusion measurements with MRI to provide an indirect reflection of the density of the cells."
Dr. Hylton and colleagues currently are assessing I-SPY data to see if MRI is better for predicting the likelihood of breast cancer recurrence. They expect to publish those results later this year.
