Apple And Google Battling On Kodak Patents

Another patent dispute has been raised between Apple and Google. According to a Tweet from Wall Street Journal editor Dennis Berman, iDevice technology discoverer Apple and search giant Google have been named as perspective customers of Kodak's upcoming patent sell-off that is expected to come in August. The Tweet mentioned that both companies were front-runners in the patent bidding battle.

At this moment, the details about the patent bidding battle are not mentioned. Currently, Kodak is looking to sell off some parts of its huge patent collection such as IP in the ?digital-capture? portfolio as part of terms attached to a granted loan for keeping the company a-going during corporate restructuring. The patent could turn out to be an engrossing war.

Wikipad Android gaming tablet gets specced, is it anything to write ...

After attracting attention with news about its upcoming gaming tablet, Wikipad has made available the most important specs for their Wikipad tablet. According to a press release, it will be released at the end of the 3rd quarter of 2012 and it will be made available through worldwide major retailers.

Even though the Wikipad debuted last January at the Consumer Electronics Show 2012, not much was known about it. Most of the specs were unknown until today. The tablet is powered by an nVidia Tegra 3 1.4GHz quad-core processor paired with 1GB of DDR2 RAM and a 520MHz GPU, while the internal storage capacity will be at least 16GB. It has a 10.1-inch IPS display with a 16:10, 1280x800 resolution. It weighs 560 grams, and the thickness is 8.6 mm. Power comes from a 23.56Wh battery, which supposedly offers 8 hours of video playback and 6 hours of gaming time. An 8 megapixel rear-facing camera along with a 2 megapixel forward-facing camera are also included. To back up the "gaming" claim, the Wikipad tablet will come with a gaming controller add-on, which attaches itself to the Wikipad at the bottom through a proprietary connector. It will ship with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box.

Aside from the handheld controller, Wikipad is essentially an Android tablet can be compared to any other 10-inch Android-powered device, and it bears especially close inspection to other Tegra 3 devices like the popular Nexus 7. It too is a nVidia Tegra 3 powered tablet, but unlike the Wikipad, its display is only a 7-inch one but with the same 1280x800 resolution. The display is characterized by 216ppi aka pixels per inch, which means that the higher the pixel density the better the quality is. The Wikipad has lower than 216ppi density simply because of the larger screen and same resolution. According to this logic, the pixels are more visible than in the Nexus 7. As a reference number, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 boasts a 1280x800 10.1-inch display and it has 149ppi, which is comparable to what the Wikipad offers. It doesn?t best the ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity, which has the same 10.1-inch display, but better resolution at 1920x1200. Judging solely by the display, it doesn?t offer much better specifications than similar Android tablets currently have.

By comparing the gaming performance between the Nexus 7 and the newer ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity, which uses a newer nVidia Tegra 3 chipset, there is only one conclusion: both perform similarly enough and the differences between the two are insignificant. It makes the Wikipad, which uses a slower than ASUS?s Tegra 3 CPU and the same GPU just another Tegra 3 tablet in terms of gaming performance.

Wikipad claims 8 hours of video playback and 6 hours of gaming time, but again the numbers are not better than current offerings from Google and ASUS, which both can manage to get more than 10 hours of video playback. Where the Wikipad can claim victory is in terms of gaming battery life, which with a stated 6 hours bests the Nexus 7 and Transformer Pad Infinity by 50 percent or 2 hours. However, if the Google Nexus 7 managed to get just 4 hours of gaming time with a sensibly smaller display it questions whether the quoted gaming time is realistic or not.

When comparing thickness and weight to a similarly sized device, like the ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity there isn?t a considerable difference. The ASUS sports an 8.5 mm thickness and a weight of 598 grams. Comparing it to the Wikipad it?s actually slimmer by 0.1 mm which is just 1.1 percent slimmer and 6.7 percent heavier with 38 extra grams of weight. The specifications are close enough to warrant stating that the difference is negligible.

The only strong suit for the Wikipad is its gaming controller, which is not standard equipment for any of the compared tablets. While it doesn?t come as OEM equipment there are similar solutions available for the ASUS Transformer tablets and a joystick available for the iPad as well.

Take the gaming controller away and you?re left with a run-of-the-mill Tegra 3 tablet that doesn't particularly shine against similar Android tablets...and we haven't even begun to factor Apple's iPad family into the equation, potentially killer gaming devices themselves with a new one expected in just a couple of months.

Press Release ? Accor Hotels and Resorts

New Zealanders might portray themselves as bargain hunters and always looking for ways to get more ?bang for their buck?, but surprisingly that doesn?t mean that they take advantage of corporate credit cards or extend business trips to take ?New Zealand business travellers keep corporate travel ?strictly business?

Business travel research highlights differences between corporate road-warriors from eight Asia Pacific countries

Auckland, 31 July 2012 ? New Zealanders might portray themselves as bargain hunters and always looking for ways to get more ?bang for their buck?, but surprisingly that doesn?t mean that they take advantage of corporate credit cards or extend business trips to take a holiday, visit friends and family or invite friends along to enjoy the free hotel night.

The Accor Asia Pacific Business Traveller Survey 2012 shows that out of the 2,586 respondents, New Zealand business travellers were the least inclined to mix business and pleasure while travelling on company time and money.

The research, conducted by leading global research consultancy ORC International, surveyed business travellers from eight destinations: Australia, China, Hong Kong SAR, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and Thailand. Accor is the largest hotel group in New Zealand with over 30 hotels under the Sofitel, Pullman, MGallery, Grand Mercure, Novotel, All Seasons and Ibis brands.

Highlights of the research findings include:

New Zealanders concentrate on business, rather than pleasure ? when asked whether they had extended their business trip to take a holiday break or to visit friends and family or had taken a friend or partner on the trip, New Zealand corporate travellers were the least likely of the eight countries surveyed. Only 11% of New Zealanders said they had extended their trip to visit friends and relatives, a mere 10% had tacked on a holiday and 12% of respondents had taken a friend or partner along on a business trip. This compares with 33% of Taiwanese, 25% of Malaysians and 20% of Hong Kongers who have extended their business trips to take a holiday. New Zealanders only just pipped the Aussies (12% verses15%) when it came to taking a non-work companion on business.

Kiwis are also reluctant to take advantage of their company credit card for ?non-work? activities while on business travel, though men are more likely than women to take advantage:

Q24a: Please indicate how much you agree or disagree with the following statements ? New Zealand travellers surveyed

Kiwis travel on business and attend meetings more for networking and internal purposes rather than their Asian counterparts whose mantra is simple ? SELL, SELL, SELL. For instance, while the principal reason for business travel by Indian and Chinese corporate travellers is for ?visiting customers?, New Zealand business travellers stated that ?internal company meetings? was their primary reason for travel.

Meanwhile, MICE travel accounted for 28% of all trips taken in the first six months of 2012. The quality of the agenda/program (60%) is what drives New Zealand business travellers to attend MICE events rather than seek business development opportunities.

Business travel still dominated by the boys ? almost three quarters of business travellers who responded to the survey across the eight countries were male. Very little changed from 2011, with 70% of Kiwi corporate travellers being male and 30% female.

Location is still number one when determining choice of hotel ? while location was the primary reason for selecting a hotel by travellers from all Asia Pacific countries, New Zealanders (60%) and Australians (68%) placed the highest importance on location well ahead of free Wi-Fi and price. As was the case in 2011, the majority of respondents in all countries believe it is more important to be located near to where they are doing business rather than located close to shopping, nightlife and entertainment areas.

A comfortable bed is key ? proven once again by Accor?s business traveller survey, a comfortable hotel bed is of the utmost importance for all business travellers. Of the top three services when staying in a hotel, New Zealanders voted for a comfortable bed number one (74%), followed by a good quality clean bathroom/shower (43%) ahead of free internet (36%) And that is why the world?s leading economy hotel brand, Ibis has instigated the largest ever upgrading of beds to meet what road-warriors want. The Ibis ?Sweet Bed? moves the brand into premium economy extending on what 5-star hotels used to provide travellers back in the nineties to make 3-star sleeping a 5-star experience today.

New Zealander corporate travellers prefer to book it themselves ? business travellers in Asia Pacific are most likely to book their hotel accommodation themselves with online the preferred medium (82%), while only a minority using offline travel agents or reservation centres. 62% of New Zealanders usually book directly with the hotel online compared to 50% of Australian respondents.

Business travellers keep quiet on social media - regardless of whether they had a positive or negative hotel experience business travellers are unlikely to always post comments on social media websites such as Facebook to TripAdvisor. More than half (52%) of New Zealand business travellers have never posted reviews on social media and the majority of respondents prefer to contact the hotel directly via comment card or email/letter in the case of a negative experience, rather than posting comments online.

New Zealanders not so keen to be green ? while Kiwis pride themselves on a clean, green image with strong environmental credentials, it appears that New Zealand business travellers would not choose a hotel above another simply because it is more environmentally conscious with only 26% driven by environmental factors. However, 69% of Kiwis would be willing to reuse their towels and linens if the hotel shared its laundry cost savings with environmental initiatives.

Personalisation a key driver for choice in ?hotels of the future? ? New Zealand business travellers would like to see more personalised services in hotels including a dedicated check-in and check-out counter for loyalty card members (64%) with more than half of Kiwi respondents wanting to see more hotel amenities and products from New Zealand.

New Zealand corporate travellers? plan more business travel in the next 6 months ? looking to the remainder of the year, the average number of business trips planned is higher than this time last year. Chinese and Indian business travellers lead the pack in terms of projected business travel, where as New Zealand corporate travellers anticipate a marginal increase in travel in the second half of 2012 compared to the first six months.

Australian neighbours top destination for New Zealand business travel ? while Singapore and China have emerged in the ?Top 3? destinations for New Zealand business travellers, not surprisingly Australia was the most popular destination for Kiwi travellers in the first half of 2012 accounting for 72% of all international business trips. However, intra-Asia travel, rather than travel to New Zealand and Australia, was the hottest travel pattern, with neither Australia nor New Zealand in the top three destinations of any of the Asian countries. The good news is that the Australians love the Kiwis back with New Zealand in Australia?s ?Top 3? destinations for business travel alongside Singapore and Hong Kong.

?While some of the survey results were not too dissimilar to the 2011 survey, the survey found that business travellers in New Zealand and Australia are generally far more focused on business rather than pleasure during their trips, despite regular reports from both sides of the Tasman about officials rorting their travel expenditure,? said Accor Pacific?s Peter Hook.

?One thing that doesn?t seem to change, however, is the disproportionate number of men to women involved in business travel. Despite all efforts made to bridge the gender gap in senior management roles, males are still well ahead of women (12 verses 7) in taking business trips.

Accor, the world?s leading hotel operator and market leader in Europe, is present in 92 countries with more than 4,400 hotels and 530,000 rooms. Accor?s broad portfolio of hotel brands ? Sofitel, Pullman, MGallery, Novotel, Suite Novotel, Mercure, Adagio, ibis, all seasons/ibis Styles, Etap Hotel/Formule 1/ibis budget, hotelF1 and Motel 6 ? provide an extensive offer from luxury to budget. With more than 180,000 employees* in Accor brand hotels worldwide, the Group offers to its clients and partners nearly 45 years of know-how and expertise.

*Including 145,000 in owned, leased and managed hotels

From the Editor's Desk: Winnipeg is still standing, mostly

Mobile Nations Editors

That's what's left of Manitoba's finest city. OK, not really, but I did spend much of last week in Winnipeg, in a series of well-caffeinated meetings with three other Mobile Nations editors. (From left, that's Rene Ritchie of iMore, myself, Dan Rubino of WPCentral, and ol' CrackBerry Kevin himself.)

Basically, we spent the week plotting our continued takeover of the world. We're in this for the long haul, and we've got some grand plans for the rest of this year, 2013, and beyond.

But we've also got some fun short-term stuff we're working on. You've already seen a bit of that put into action, with our increased focus on accessories. And you're going to see some more this week with new features.

And now, a few other musings ...

Low Income Auto Loans ? Is It Possible To Get A Car Loan With Low ...

Modern technology has gifted man one of his greatest passion ? cars. Ever since the invention of steam engine vehicles in 1769, cars have been popular. Everyone is just floored by the beauty of a car.

Sadly, buying a car has become difficult. All thanks to high purchase prices of these beauties. Most new cars start from $20,000 and a good used car is also expensive. Also, the gas prices are increasing which makes car buying very hard.

The economy is reviving and people have just started getting their jobs back. Finding a high income job is still a challenge. This creates a very bad situation because a car is needed to reach your work place but you cannot afford it with your job. Lenders have understood this situation quite well and that is why auto loans for low income borrowers have been introduced.

Most lenders require you to earn at least $1,500 per month. But, you can avail these loans even if your income is as less as $1,000. Now, don?t worry if you earn less than it because there are many other factors which decide your approval. Know them so that you can tackle them well.

1. Credit Score ? Higher the score, better it is.

2. Credit Profile ? Here the requirement is that it should be longer.

3. Term of Loan ? You should try and keep it short.

4. Loan to Value Ratio ? 70% -80% is optimum.

5. Down Payment ? 10%- 20% would improve your chances.

6. Employment Term ? At least six months.

7. Time at Residence ? You need to be living at the same residence for at least six months.

8. Co-signer ? Having a co-signer reduces lender?s risk.

When you have a low income, you must be better at these aspects. Now, it is quite possible that you have a bad credit score and earn less. For such a situation, get a larger down payment and search for a co-signer.

Now, as you have low income, it is essential that you don?t go for a very expensive car. If you go for an expensive car, its payments would also be huge. To avoid them, you will have to go for an unnecessarily longer loan term. This will increase the chances of an upside down loan. Hence, a used car is your answer. Once you improve on your income, you can always buy your dream car. Right now, it is important to get you a car that works for you. When you go for a pre-owned car, don?t forget to read the Vehicle History Report. It?s always good to know what you are getting into. Also, get the Odometer Disclosure Report because few lenders do ask for it.

Applying for Low Income Auto Loans is simple because you don?t need any additional documents. The only important thing is to prove your income. For that, you can use your recent pay stubs. If you are self-employed, it is important that you provide your IT details to the lender.

Low income auto loans are easy to get and a boon to those who are struggling with low income. So, don?t wait anymore. Cars are a necessity and it?s time to fulfill your car needs.

Ezautofinance.net is a leading auto financing company that serves the entire nation. We understand that low income is the cause of several unfulfilled car dreams and so, offer low income auto loans. Avail them and get ready to ride comfortably in your car.

Rod Graves, Ken WhisenhuntAP

Fans are naturally more interested in players and coaches than front-office employees.

But in Arizona, the intrigue over the firing of a salary cap administrator creates questions about the direction of the franchise and its leadership.

On its face, getting rid of Justin Casey is a line of agate type, the kind of transaction no one notices. But inside Cardinal headquarters, it has apparently created a bit of a divide.

Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reports the move was ?deeply felt inside the team?s headquarters in Tempe,? and could hint at a split between General Manager Rod Graves and coach Ken Whisenhunt.

Somers said it would be ?hard to find a Cardinals employee more well-liked by his co-workers? than Casey, and there was no previous sense he was bad at his job.?But he was also close with Whisenhunt, as the two occasionally played golf together.

Was that the reason he was fired, as a power play by Graves?

?That?s ridiculous,? Graves told Somers, when asked about the speculation. ?Ken and I have a wonderful working relationship, and we?re on the same page in respect to improving as an organization, improving as a team and working together.?

Casey himself declined comment to Somers, and Graves didn?t elaborate on why he was replaced. There were other moves made in the front office as well, so perhaps it was part of a larger organizational shift.

Casey was replaced by Sean Castle, a CPA with no NFL experience.

?Our focus is on being a championship organization and becoming a championship team,? Graves said. ?Every year in that quest, I?m evaluating where we are, from a personnel standpoint, and assessing new talent out there.

?What I have been able to do in assessing candidates is really get a feel for the skill sets people have and realize what services they can provide us that we don?t have. And sometimes at the end of that evaluation, you come to the conclusion that you?re better off making changes.?

That?s all well and good, and there could easily be a reason for all this. But when moves like this are made without full explanation, the vacuum quickly fills with conspiracy theories. Whether there?s a Graves-Whisenhunt split or not, the impression does no good for the organization, and barring evidence to the contrary, folks will begin to believe it whether it?s true or not.

US team expects tough challenge in chase for gold

LONDON (AP) ? It's go time for the U.S. Olympic men's basketball team. It's gold time.

The challenging exhibition schedule is over, marching in the opening ceremony is already a memory and the Olympic flame is burning brightly.

"We're ready," said coach Mike Krzyzewski.

They'd better be. Don't expect any opponents asking for photographs or autographs ? there are teams here that feel they can beat the Americans.

Although heavily favored to win the 12-nation tournament and capture gold just as they did four years ago in Beijing, the superstar-studded U.S. squad will face a talented field loaded with NBA players.

On Sunday, the U.S. opens pool play against France, an experienced squad led by San Antonio guard Tony Parker, who nearly missed the London Games because of a serious eye injury. Parker's ability to break down defenses and create in the open floor could pose an early problem for the Americans. And he's not the only headache for the U.S. as France's roster includes Ronny Turiaf, Boris Diaw, Nicolas Batum, Kevin Seraphin and Nando de Colo ? all currently on NBA rosters.

"It's a big test for us," U.S. forward Carmelo Anthony said, lacing up his sneakers Saturday before practice at East London University. "We're going up against guys that we normally play on a night-to-night basis, and those countries have put them all together just like we have. And at the end of the day their main goal is to beat the United States.

"There's going to be some good battles."

France will only be the first. This isn't going to be some easy sightseeing stroll along the Thames for the American team before stepping onto the gold-medal stand. Spain, Argentina and Brazil are all talented enough to not only compete with the U.S., but potentially upset the world's No. 1 team.

That wasn't the case four years ago, when the U.S. steamrolled through the field, winning by at least 20 points in each of its first seven games before beating Spain 118-107 in the final. Krzyzewski, who guided the 2008 "Redeem Team" to gold, believes a potential road to gold could have some dangerous bumps.

"The overall 12 teams are more talented, more seasoned," he said. "Spain is just in the prime of their ? 28, 29 (years of age). Brazil is in that wheelhouse. I think Russia's really, really good. Obviously Argentina, everyone says they're older but their heart and talent has not gotten older, It's just gotten better.

"There's just more teams that feel that they have a chance to win the gold medal ? and medal ? than they did in '08."

Count the French among them. They finished second to Spain at last year's European Championships, and maintain they won't be intimidated by the U.S. team's collection of All-Stars, MVPs and household names. France's players have no intention of being posterized on a dunk by LeBron James or Kobe Bryant the way 7-foot-2 countryman Frederic Weis was famously embarrassed by a soaring Vince Carter in the 2000 Sydney Games.

France, 0-4 against the U.S. in Olympic competition, isn't frightened.

"For us there is no fear factor because we play against them all the time," said Parker, who will wear goggles to protect his surgically repaired left eye. "We know they are really, really good. But it's not going to be like the other teams where they don't see them and it's like, 'Oh, wow, I'm playing against Kobe and LeBron.'"

Bryant likened France's offense to the one Parker runs with the Spurs. Everything starts with the ball in Parker's hands, so the U.S. team's challenge will be to make him give it up.

"Slow him down and surround him," Bryant said. "Keep bodies in front of him at all times."

This U.S. team, comprised of five holdovers from the '08 squad, five from the 2010 world championship team and two newcomers, was loose and relaxed before Saturday's workout, a final tune-up before beginning the five-game preliminary round. Durant and Anthony playfully horsed around in the foul lane and Bryant smiled amusingly as photographers jockeyed for position like paparazzi trying to record his every move.

The mood will be decidedly different Sunday.

That's when everything change. That's when it matters.

"Everybody expects us to win gold," James said. "And that's what we're here for. Nothing else."

In recent days, Bryant, James and the other U.S. players have been careful not to get trapped into making comparisons to the Dream Team. Bryant recently caused a stir by saying the 2012 Olympians could beat the 1992 version that included Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

Jordan called Bryant's comments "not one of the smarter things he ever could have done."

For now, the talk has quieted, the comparisons can wait. For this American team to be regarded among the others before them, there can only be one medal.

"The legacy will be determined if you win the gold or you don't," Krzyzewski said. "We're not talking about legacy everyday but it is. We're here to win a gold medal, and if we do less than that, then it will be a big loss for us."

POS Solutions with Point of Sale Software and Retail Point of Sale ...

Today in the retail industry customer service is very important. Through the use of point of sale software, organizations are finding that there is more time for their associates to help customers rather than tracking down inventory or chasing prices. Making the choice to use a system such as this is very helpful for the business in general.

    ?

Deciding on the software you might use can be a difficult decision. There are a number of options available that will help you meet the needs of your customer as well as track and control inventory. It is important today to minimize the investment in inventory but to maintain a level that provides the customers with the things that they need.

    ?

Determining the choice you will make can depend on a number of different factors today. There are choices that will not require a major system overhaul and new hardware. At the same time you will find options that require specialized scanning equipment as well as new hardware to work properly.

    ?

Normally the choice is made based on the overall cost and performance put together. Additional influencing factors might include the ease of use as well as the transition from one system to another. Many times when an organization is planning this type of change they will do so when they conduct their physical inventory to help ease the transition for customer and workers alike.

    ?

    .

The choices that are available will include systems that can help you maintain your inventory level. This is done based on the number you put into the system that should be a reorder point. The number is normally based on the lead time for the products as well as average use.

    ?

Selecting POS solutions is something that management will normally do to reduce the investments required in inventory as well as increase the level of customer service that is available. The options that are found will help workers be more available for customers and help to control any problems that are found with the inventory levels.

    ?

When considering a retail point of sale system you need to consider the industry that you are in. Retail sales are done for a wide range of venues today. However making sure that the point of sale software can help you achieve your goals is going to be very important.

    ?

Strategy Analytics: iPad keeps riding high in Q2 tablet market share, Android doesn't budge

Strategy Analytics iPad keeps riding high in Q2 tablet market share, Android stalls

The Apple iPad may as well be called the Teflon Tablet for now, since challengers can't quite stick. Thanks to those 17 million iPads shipped in the second quarter, Strategy Analytics estimates that Apple held on to the 68 percent of tablet market share that IDC credited to the company in the previous season. That may not sound like a change in the status quo, but it's a significant jump from the 62 percent Apple had a year ago -- and not very good news for anyone else. Android is still holding on at 29.3 percent, although that's slightly underwhelming given the surge of extra devices in that time frame. The real hurt was dished out to Windows 7 tablets and "others" like RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook, both of whom were cut down to just 1.2 points of share each in the spring. We'll see if the newer crowd moves the needle for Android in the summer, although the well-received Nexus 7's current scarcity won't help its chances -- and both Microsoft as well as RIM are in holding patterns for the next several months.

Apple wins 'EU-wide' injunction against Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7

Apple wins EUwide injunction against Galaxy Tab 77

Word around the mulberry bush is that Apple has just won itself a Europe-wide injunction against the sale of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, in case anyone still wanted to buy that tablet now that the Nexus 7 is out. The decision was taken in-between beer courses at the appeals court in Dusseldorf, but it didn't all go Apple's way -- Cupertino's request to have the re-designed Galaxy Tab 10.1 (aka the 10.1N) banned too was rejected, having already been turned down at preliminary hearing back in February.

The Tab 7.7 apparently infringes Apple patents that date from 2004 and, such is the power of one little German town, cannot technically be sold anywhere in the EU -- although other countries may choose to ignore the ruling and it's probably only a matter of time before a 7.7N comes out anyway. In contrast, the failed claim against the 10-inch slate hinged on a "generic design patent," which a British judge has also vehemently dismissed. Glossing over the 7.7 decision, Samsung says it "welcomes the court's ruling" with regard to the 10.1N and accuses Apple of using "legal claims" to restrict "design innovation and progress in the industry."

Bruce Springsteen, suicidal and depressed in '80s

    Leonhard Foeger / Reuters

Bruce Springsteen performs with the E. Street Band in Oslo, Norway, on Saturday, July 21.

    By Courtney Hazlett

If you thought most of what could be said about Bruce Springsteen has already been said, perhaps reconsider. David Remnick's 15,000-word profile in the July 30 issue of the New Yorker proves that there's a good bit we didn't know about the 62-year old singer. Among the most notable revelations: Springsteen was at one point suicidal and depressed.

His struggles really came to the surface after the success of albums such as "Born to Run" and "Darkness on the Edge of Town."

"Springsteen was also experiencing intervals of depression that were far more serious than the occasional guilt trip about being 'a rich man in a poor man's shirt,' as he sings in 'Better Days.' A cloud of crisis hovered as Springsteen was finishing his acoustic masterpiece 'Nebraska,' in 1982," Remnick writes in the profile. "He drove from the East Coast to California and then drove straight back.

"'He was feeling suicidal,' Springsteen's friend and biographer Dave Marsh said. 'The depression wasn't shocking, per se. He was on a rocket ride, from nothing to something, and now you are getting your ass kissed day and night. You might start to have some inner conflicts about your real self-worth.'"

Remnick, who shadowed Springsteen during rehearsals for this year's Wrecking Ball tour, visited Springsteen's home in Colts Neck, N.J., and even visited the singer on the European leg of his tour in preparation for the piece, writes that in 1982, Springsteen started seeing a psychotherapist to tackle his harder-to-identify issues.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band continue to define American rock 'n' roll.

"My issues weren't as obvious as drugs," Springsteen told Remnick. "Mine were different, they were quieter -- just as problematic, but quieter. With all artists, because of the undertow of history and self-loathing, there is a tremendous push toward self-obliteration that occurs onstage. It's both things: there's a tremendous finding of the self while also an abandonment of the self at the same time. You are free of yourself for those hours; all the voices in your head are gone, just gone..."

Ultimately, and after 30 years of therapy, Springsteen is at peace with his darker side, which fuels the talent that makes him precisely who he is. He explains it to Remnick: "Look, you cannot underestimate the fine power of self-loathing in all of this. You think, I don't like anything I'm seeing, I don't like anything I'm doing, but I need to change myself, I need to transform myself. I do not know a single artist who does not run on that fuel. If you are extremely pleased with yourself, nobody would be f------ doing it! Brando would not have acted. Dylan wouldn't have written 'Like a Rolling Stone.' James Brown wouldn't have gone 'Unh!' He wouldn't have searched that one-beat down that was so hard. That's a motivation, that element of 'I need to remake myself, my town, my audience' -- that desire for renewal."
