Shortly after we moved to New York City, we spent one night doing something that we never realized would soon become a nightly tradition. When we moved to the city in our tiny little apartment, it was the first time , in more than seven months, that we had lived together as a family. At the time, our oldest daughter Harlan was only nine months, but she already loved to dance.
With the nights finally spent together as a family, we turned on the music shortly after dinner and just started to dance. The first nights were spent with my husband ?slow dancing? with Harlan in his arms. As she?s gotten older, it?s turned into her doing her own dance moves and my husband following along.
We usually just turn on whatever genre of music our hearts desire. Some nights it?s pop music, others it?s classical. But no matter what type of music we choose, it?s always the best part of our night.
A couple of weeks ago, we turned the iPad on for our nightly routine. We used to use the television?s music channels for our music choice, but lately since Harlan has had such specific song requests for our dance parties, we?ve used the iPad. We simply open the YouTube application and find music videos that she wants to watch. The iPad has made our dance parties include a wide variety of music each night, rather than one kind as it?s always been before. I love using it because it make?s everything literally right at my fingertips, Harlan likes using it because she?s taught herself how to find songs that we?ve played before.
The other night it was just me and the girls because my husband was out of town. For some reason we were feeling pop music that evening and One Direction?s ?One Thing? was the song of choice. As Harlan and I were dancing our hearts out to the tunes, Avery pulls herself up on the stool where the iPad was sitting and began to sway her hips. The hip swaying then turned into knee movement up and down. This little girl had just learned to dance. After all of that time watching the entire family participate in the nightly dance parties, she could finally get in on it all on her own. And boy did she step up to the game.?Little did I know that all it took to break out her moves, was the iPad and a catchy song from a popular boy band.
Now our nightly routine is even more special to me because it can truly get everyone in our family involved. Rather than my husband or myself holding Avery to dance along, she gets to follow along now with her own moves. She loves to stand in front of the iPad and watch along to the music videos bouncing and moving her hips. Her favorite is still that One Direction song, which, thanks to our iPad, can easily be played any time we want!
