This week, the Baltimore Ravens have utilized former Oregon University QB Dennis Dixon (2004-07) to stand in for RG3.? Dixon has been with the Ravens' practice squad since November 13, after several years on the bench with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The entire NFL fanbase knows Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III is a rising star who is ripping apart the NFL rookie record book one page at a time.? He was a quarterback stud at Baylor University who went on to win last year's Heisman Trophy. ?
RG3 has won the NFL "Rookie of the Week" award for the third straight week and six times this year.? I have always asserted?he is "The Most Interesting Man in the NFL."
So how would you feel when you learn your next opponent is using someone from their practice squad as your stand-in as the team prepares to face you, and your team, on Sunday?
During his media briefing?Friday afternoon, as seen on baltimoreravens.com, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh was asked about the role Dixon has played in practice this week. ?
On the similarities to RG3 and pistol-style offense:
"He ran it at Oregon. He understands the reads, the timing of it, the footwork and those things. It was a big plus for our defense. He's been into it all week."
On the ever-evolving Redskins offense:?
"The difficulty in preparing for the Redskins is the fact that their offense is a little bit unconventional.? It encompasses elements of the read option, the dive option...They have kind of perfected that offense as well."
This from the head coach of a 9-3 team whose defense has struggled and faltered this season.? Last season, the Ravens finished ranked third in defense?this season, they are currently ranked 23rd in total defense.
The Redskins and the RG3-led offense have put a scare in some teams over the last three weeks. ?This week will not be any different.
The Ravens are trying to secure their fifth consecutive postseason appearance and would do so with a win over the Redskins. ?The Redskins are clinging to a playoff possibility and a win over the Ravens will continue to add fuel to fire that has the team playing every game as a "must-win" game situation.
The Baltimore Ravens travel less than one-hour drive to face the Washington Redskins Sunday, Dec. 9 at 1 p.m. ET on CBS. ?
