Washington Animal Rescue League Takes in 19 Dogs for Rehabilitation

The following information was sent to us by?Jennifer Haber:

The Washington Animal Rescue League (the League) has taken in 19 dogs that were rescued from a rural property near Macon, Miss. in December 2011. The dogs were rescued by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) in partnership with local authorities and the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

?We can provide the medical care and support that these animals have needed and deserved for a long time,? said Dr. Gary Weitzman, the League?s CEO. ?These animals are exactly the kind of animals that the League is set up to help. We?re very happy to be able to take these dogs in and work to find them permanent homes.?

The dogs are part of a group of 108 canines that were recued from living in deplorable, unsanitary conditions, including feces-ridden outdoor pens with little protection from natural elements.?

The dogs receiving sanctuary at the League are the last to leave an HSUS emergency shelter where they received necessary immediate medical attention. They include several dogs infected with heartworm and/or Ehrlichia?who were refused entrance into Massachusetts, where they were originally scheduled to go, due to state quarantine regulations.

The dogs, who range in age from 2 weeks to 8 years, will receive treatment at the League?s state-of-the-art Medical Center in Northwest Washington, D.C. After being treated and evaluated by the League?s behavior staff, the dogs will be made available for adoption. A golden retriever-type mix and her littler of 9 week-old puppies will be fostered by a WARL-volunteer trained in the care of neonatal pups.
