Inside peek at Accenture Labs: Google Glass, Big Oil, augmented reality

Vicki Thompson

Accenture CTO Paul Daugherty models Google Glass at Accenture Technology Labs in San Jose.

Click above to see inside the lab.

Accenture Technology Labs is located just down the street from our newsroom here in downtown San Jose, and I recently got the chance to take an inside look at some of its projects in the works.

I saw how the R&D unit of management consulting and outsourcing company Accenture is testing and researching two very buzz-worthy technologies: Google Glass and augmented reality.

Aside from getting to try on Google Glass for myself (read my thoughts here), the folks at Accenture explained how they are testing the wearable computing device?s use in several verticals. I watched Paul Daugherty, Accenture?s Chief Technology Officer, demo how Google Glass might be used in the oil and gas industry.

He and Brent Blum, manager of Digital Experiences at Accenture Technology Labs, explained that an oil and gas worker wearing Google Glass could be handsfree when performing a repair task, and the heads up display could show him what part would need replacing, for example.

Blum also demonstrated Accenture?s augemented reality shopping project, which would help brick-and mortar-retailers attract and retain customers who are otherwise doing most of their shopping on their smartphones.

Click through the slideshow (above, right) to learn more about my tour of Accenture Technology Labs.

Will PG&E Corp. (PCG) Beat Earnings?

PG&E Corp. (PCG) is set to report its second quarter 2013 results on Jul 31, 2013. Last quarter, the company posted a 10% negative surprise. Let?s see how things are shaping up for this announcement.

Factors to Consider This Quarter

PG&E Corporation has a solid portfolio of regulated utility assets that offer a stable earnings base and substantial long-term growth potential. The company strives to optimize generation margins by improving its cost structure, performance and reliability of its nuclear as well as fossil units.

Going forward, we expect the company?s earnings growth to be driven by favorable decisions from California Public Utilities Commission (:CPUC) and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, as well as long-term supply agreements, diversification into alternative power sources and infrastructure improvement programs resulting in rate base growth.

PG&E Corporation operates in the regulatory progressive state of California. The CPUC provides the company with ample regulatory support through progressive mechanisms like decoupling that insulates the top line of the company from risks arising out of lower customer usage, weather vagaries and volatility in prices to some extent.

However, the present unfavorable macro backdrop, tepid demand for electricity, any accidental charges or any severe fluctuation in prices keep us concerned.

Earnings Whispers?

Our proven model does not conclusively show that PG&E Corp. is likely to beat earnings this quarter. That is because a stock needs to have both a positive Zacks earnings Expected Surprise Prediction or ESP (Read: Zacks Earnings ESP: A Better Method) and a Zacks Rank of #1, 2 or 3 for this to happen. That is not the case here, as you will see below.

Zacks ESP: The Zacks ESP is 0.0%.

Zacks Rank #3 (Hold): PG&E Corp. carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). However, the Zacks Rank #3 when combined with a 0.0% ESP makes surprise prediction difficult. We caution against stocks with Zacks Ranks #4 and 5 (Sell-rated stocks) going into the earnings announcement.

Other Stocks to Consider

Here are some other companies you may want to consider, as our model shows they have the right combination of elements to post an earnings beat this quarter:

IdaCorp, Inc. (IDA), with Earnings ESP of +17.65% and a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).

UIL Holdings Corporation (UIL), with Earnings ESP of +3.70% and a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).

FirstEnergy Corp. (FE), with Earnings ESP of +5.66% and a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).

S. Texas jailer accused of groping female inmate

ROCKPORT ? A South Texas jailer has been fired and charged with groping a female inmate while she was on kitchen duty.

KRIS-TV in Corpus Christi reported on Monday that Paul Noel has been charged with violating the civil rights of a person in custody and improper sexual activity with a person in custody.

Noel worked at the Aransas County Detention Center in Rockport when an inmate in May filed a complaint about improper touching. The criminal complaint says the 65-year-old jailer supervised the woman, who alleges she was groped by him more than once.

Noel told KRIS-TV that the incidents were consensual.

Noel was put on leave after the complaint, fired in early June and arrested ?on June 17. He's free on $2,500 bond.

Further details on the inmate weren't available.

Poland's first face transplant patient goes home

(AP) ? Poland's first face transplant patient was discharged from the hospital Tuesday, speaking with some effort at a press conference just 11 weeks after the extensive surgery that saved his life.

The 33-year-old man said he owes his doctors "everything" following a skin-and-bone transplant on May 15, three weeks after losing his nose, upper jaw and cheeks in an accident at the brick factory where he worked. Doctors say it was the world's fastest time frame for such an operation.

Doctors who performed the transplant at the Cancer Center and Institute of Oncology in Gliwice, in southern Poland, said the rehabilitation is proceeding faster than expected thanks to the "courage and determination" of the patient, identified only as Grzegorz.

He can breathe on his own, see, eat, taste and speak, although his speech is hard to understand because the face muscles still need to regain mobility. When that is achieved, through intensive exercise, he will need surgery on his right eyelid, which remains motionless. At the news conference, his eyes were hidden behind sunglasses.

The surgery reconstructed the area around the eyes, nose, jaw and palate and other facial areas, with the transplant running from above his right eye, under his left eye and around his face to his neck.

He will need to avoid large gatherings and sick people to protect against infection. He will take medication for the rest of his life, the anesthesiologist, Dr. Sebastian Giebel, told the news conference. Potted plants, rugs and the man's dog had to be removed from his home because they were potential sources of infection, he said.

Grzegorz will be able to resume work, though he will have to avoid working in agriculture, where he could catch fungi infection from the soil, according to Dr. Adam Maciejewski, who led the 27-hour operation

His mother was making roast duck for his homecoming, said his sister, who identified herself only as Barbara.

"We will see what comes next, but we are and will be with him," she said.

The patient took the microphone to thank his doctors. "My speech isn't clear, but it's really important that it is there," he said. "I know it's still a long way." His words were transcribed in a broadcast by TVN24 after the press conference.

He was injured in an April 23 accident at his job at a concrete brick factory near the southwestern city of Wroclaw when a packaging machine tore off most of his face, including the upper jaw.

He received intensive treatment at a hospital in Wroclaw that saved his life and eyesight. But an attempt to reattach his own face failed, leaving an area close to the brain exposed to infections.

The damage was too extensive for doctors to temporarily seal the wound, and an urgent transplant was the only way to save the man's life. Face transplants are extraordinarily complicated and relatively rare procedures that usually require extensive preparation of the recipient over a period of months or years, but the Polish patient's condition was deteriorating so rapidly that the doctors had to act fast.

The donor, a 34-year-old man, was chosen from a national registry of potential donors after his age, gender, blood group and body features were determined to be a good match for the injured man.

More than two dozen transplants of the face or parts of the face have been performed around the world. The first one was a partial face transplant on a woman maimed by her dog in France in 2005.

(AP) ? Missy Franklin got the Americans rolling. Then Katie Ledecky really fired 'em up.

By the end of the night, the U.S. team was awash in medals at the world swimming championships.

Franklin and Ledecky each won her second gold medal of the meet, Matt Grevers led a 1-2 American finish in the backstroke, and there was plenty of reason to celebrate for the red, white and blue on Tuesday.

"We've had an absolutely incredible evening," Franklin said. "I'm so proud of all my teammates."

In all, the Americans claimed three golds, two silvers and a bronze ? a strong meet for most nations, certainly quite a haul in a mere two hours.

"A big night for us," said Bob Bowman, head coach of the U.S. men's team.

Everyone was raving about Ledecky, only 16 but already well on her way to becoming one of the country's great distance swimmers. She obliterated the world record in the 1,500-meter freestyle, which may be a non-Olympic event for the women but did nothing to diminish the magnitude of her accomplishment.

After going stroke for stroke with Denmark's Lotte Friis most of the race, with both well under world-record pace, Ledecky really turned it on over the final 200 and beat the mark by more than 6 seconds. Friis also went under the old record, and all it got her was silver.

"It was motivating watching Katie destroy the world record from the ready room," Grevers said. "That really got us psyched."

Franklin cruised through a demanding double, easily winning the 100 backstroke before returning about an hour later to post the second-fastest time in the semifinals of the 200 free.

"It's tough, but it's fun," the 18-year-old said. "I'm super happy with my 100 back. It really got me pumped up for the 200 free."

Grevers touched ahead of teammate David Plummer in the 100 backstroke, and there were Americans on the podium in all five finals. Conor Dwyer picked up a silver behind France's Yannick Agnel in the 200 free, and Jessica Hardy chipped in with a bronze in the 100 breaststroke won by Lithuania's Ruta Meilutyte.

The only disappointment for the U.S. was Ryan Lochte, who labored to a fourth-place finish in the 200 free.

"It wasn't my night," the three-time Olympian said. "But I have to put it behind me because I still have many races to swim."

He hopes to compete in seven events in Barcelona, despite not being able to train as much as usual this year while taking part in his reality television show, "What Would Ryan Lochte Do?"

"It was kind of a tough swim for him," Bowman said. "He has obviously not had a season with his characteristic preparation. But he's racing tough. He'll be back tomorrow. He'll be fine."

Ledecky is clearly in top form. She nearly broke the world record in winning the 400 free before leaving no doubt about the 1,500, touching in a time 15 minutes, 36.53 seconds ? nearly a half-lap ahead of the line superimposed on the video screen marking the pace of Kate Ziegler's mark from six years ago, 15:42.54.

"She's probably made in the same factory as Michael Phelps," marveled Mereia Belmonte of Spain, who finished far back in fourth.

Friis took silver in 15:38.88, with New Zealand's Lauren Boyle grabbing the bronze.

"I knew that world record was going down tonight, but 6 seconds!" Franklin said. "All of us were totally in awe."

Ledecky looks even stronger than she did last year while winning Olympic gold in the 800 free, a stunning breakthrough for someone barely known on the international stage.

Naturally, after that performance, she arrived in Barcelona dealing with the weight of hefty expectations. Plus, she decided to take on an exhausting program that also includes the 800 free.

No problem.

"I knew we were going pretty fast, and I figured that whoever was going to come out on top was probably going to get the world record," said Ledecky, who's going into her junior year of high school. "So I just had to be careful not to push it too early or push it too late and just touch the wall first."

Franklin breezed to victory in the 100 back in 58.42 seconds. After capturing four golds and a bronze at the London Olympics, the recent high school graduate is trying to join Phelps as the only swimmers to win eight events at a major championship. She is now 2 for 2 at the Palau Sant Jordi, adding to her gold in the 4x100 free relay.

Australia's Emily Seebohm won silver and Japan's Aya Terakawa bronze.

After the medal ceremony, Franklin hustled off to get ready for the 200 free semifinals. She barely qualified for the final of that event in London and was edged out for a bronze medal by one-hundredth of a second.

Franklin has spent much of the past year working to improve her freestyle, and the results showed. Franklin easily qualified for the final in 1:56.05, trailing only world-record holder Federica Pellegrini of Italy.

"Hopefully, I will keep the momentum going," Franklin said. "Hopefully, Team USA will, too."

Agnel pushed the pace right from the start and never let up. He touched in 1:44.20, a full body length ahead of the field, setting off another wild celebration from the large French contingent in the crowd.

Instead of Lochte, the American winning a medal was Dwyer, a friend and former training partner of Phelps. Danila Izotov of Russia took bronze. Lochte missed a spot on the podium by 0.05.

Agnel is now a training partner of Dwyer's, having moved recently to the North Baltimore Aquatic Club to work with Bowman, who was Phelps' longtime coach.

"I am so surprised," said Agnel, the reigning Olympic champion. "I did not expect such a result."

Grevers showed he's still the man to beat in the 100 back after winning gold at London. The American was second at the turn but overtook France's Jeremy Stravius to win in 52.93. Plummer also got past Stravius for the silver, while the Frenchman settled for bronze.

Meilutyte just missed the world record she set the previous night in the semifinals of the 100 breast, winning in 1:04.42. Russia's Yuliya Efimova was next, while Hardy ? the former world-record holder ? pulled out a bronze.

"Maybe the excitement and wanting to win altered my stroke," Meilutyte said. "I was dying toward the end of it. There's still things to improve, which is great."

It certainly would've been hard for the American team to improve on this night.

Brad Spirrison: Surveying the Best iPad Apps for Special Needs Students

Get Technology Newsletters:

While iPads and touchscreen devices are impacting virtually every level of educational instruction, apps designed for special needs students are particularly transformative. These five apps for students with autism, dyslexia, Attention Deficit Disorders and speech issues are among the best of hundreds of worthy titles available.

Reading Comprehension Camp ($19.99)
Performance on state testing is often the sole determination of whether a special education student receives a general or special diploma, so proficiency in reading comprehension is a critical skill, particularly for middle school students. Reading Comprehension Camp addresses this all important skill, and is created by a high school English teacher and his speech therapist wife. It has solid educational and therapeutic underpinnings. Students can work independently or in groups with questions tailored to their specific areas of weakness. While comprehension is the primary focus, the ability to record students reading passages out loud provides a bonus means to assess fluency and all data is backed up in the Therapy Report Center. The stories are gender neutral and cover topics which would generally be within most students' frame of reference.

VAST Autism 1 - Core ($4.99)
The simplicity of this app shows young children how to form words using video modeling and auditory and visual cueing. These are all excellent strategies to use with young children with autism. The videos are focused on one area -- the mouth, which allows children with autism to focus on the area necessary to mimic or reproduce the target word or sound. The multi-sensory approach is appealing to children, therapists, and parents. This therapeutic tool is one that parents and therapists must have in their toolkit! The videos are simple to use. However, VAST Autism Core is really designed to be used with adult supervision for younger children.

Articulation Station (Free)
Articulation Station addresses all English consonant speech sounds your child may have difficulty expressing. Individual speech sounds (ranging in price from $0.99 to $5.99) may be purchased based on your child's needs. Video tutorials are also available for parents to use as a guide. With the purchase of the entire package of speech sounds, custom images can be added to the image library. This app teaches the user how to correctly articulate (say) speech sounds within a word (ex. initial, medial, and final). Levels of practice (words, sentences, or stories) can be personalized for each user. While working, users have the option to record their voice for auditory feedback. All data and recordings can be stored within the app and shared via email.

Avaz - AAC App for Autism ($99.99)
Avaz is an Augmentative and Alternative Communication App for non-verbal children. Avaz gives children who did not have a voice an opportunity to be a part of the class. If they are working with their speech therapist, the app can track the session to show student progress. It has the option of using the pre-made picture folders that came with the app or develop more personalized folders that can be color-coded and have anywhere from 1- 24 pictures in a folder. Folders can be made by pressing the + add new. You can either add a new message in a prior category or develop a new category.

Visual Attention TherAPPy ($9.99)
Any app that contains therapy in the name makes us leery, but when it's created by a licensed speech therapist and peer reviewed research supporting its methodology for use with dyslexia is cited on the developer's website, it merits a close look. Visual Attention TherAppy seeks to improve scanning ability and discrimination of letters and symbols which, if successful, should translate into better reading fluency. The iPad lets users complete their therapy on the go, so odds are there will be better compliance. Extensive, emailable data reporting lets parents and teachers supervise progress.

These app selections were curated by multiple appoLearning Advisors including Jill Goodman, Hilary Brumer, Lisa West, and Vicki Windman.

Toshiba outs Satellite E45t / E55 mid-range laptops, Intel models have Dragon Assistant pre-loaded

Toshiba outs Satellite E45t / E55 mid-range ultraportables, Intel models have Dragon Assistant pre-loaded

A few months after introducing its Kirabook flagship, Toshiba is back with some mid-range laptops that bring some of the same understated design elements. The 14-inch Satellite E45t Ultrabook and the 15-inch E55, announced today, have the same pared-down look as the Kirabook, except they're made of aluminum instead of pressed magnesium, and the bottom isn't made of metal but rather, textured plastic. The screen resolution is also lower, at 1,366 x 768; these are middle-of-the-road machines, after all. On the bright side, they all support 802.11ac WiFi -- of a surprise on otherwise humdrum systems like these. The E45t, which will be sold only at Best Buy and on Toshiba's site, comes in just one configuration, with a Core i5 Haswell processor and a 500GB hard drive paired with an SSD. Perhaps most interesting, though, is that the E45t will come with Dragon Assistant on board for simple voice commands (think: shutting down the computer, doing a web search, controlling multimedia playback, et cetera). You can expect to find that next week, on August 4th, with a suggested retail price of $818, though a Toshiba rep told us it'll likely sell for $799.99 once it actually hits shelves. Just a heads-up.

The 15-inch version, meanwhile, will be offered with either a Core i5 processor and touchscreen (that's the E55t) or a quad-core A6 APU. There are actually two AMD models: one configuration comes with a touchscreen (that would be the E55Dt) and one has a non-touch panel (that's the E55D). Strangely, the non-touch model also offers lesser storage; that has a 750GB HDD, while the touch version goes up to a full terabyte. Either way, you get a number pad, which you won't find on the 14-incher, though you'll be missing out on that Dragon Assistant app with the AMD models. These will be available in September, a little later than the 14-inch model, with the non-touch E55D going for $580 and the touchscreen E55Dt priced at $700. We haven't yet confirmed pricing for the E55t, that lone Intel-based model, but we'll update this post once we do.

British troops carry out secret mission against Taliban in Sangin

British troops have carried out a major operation in Afghanistan in an area which has seen some of the fiercest battles of the war, the Ministry of Defence has said.

About 80 British soldiers travelled to Sangin to fight Taliban insurgents with the Afghan National Army (ANA), just months before it takes full control of security in the country.

The latest mission, which was kept secret until after it was completed earlier this week, required the special permission of the defence secretary, Philip Hammond, because of a government push to transfer combat operations to the ANA, the Sunday Times reported.

In recent months, British armed forces have instead been focusing on mentoring the ANA in preparation for their withdrawal from the country next year.

The MoD said specialist advisers from the Brigade Advisory Group, made up of the 4th Battalion The Rifles, provided support to the UK-mentored 3/215 Brigade for the eight-day mission.

It said the involvement of British troops was "in line" with their current advisory role. "In support of the Afghan forces who now have the security lead across the country, UK personnel do on occasion operate outside the usual UK area of operations in central Helmand in an advisory capacity," the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

"These out-of-area operations have been a long-standing element of the UK mission in Afghanistan and are completely in line with our current role of providing training, advice and assistance to the Afghan National Security Forces."

The statement added that Sangin "remains a challenging area" and it is now for the Afghan forces to deal with insurgents.

During the operation, a number of insurgents were detained and killed, more than 30 improvised explosive devices were found and destroyed and two vehicles were seized along with ammunition and weapons.

There were no British casualties but a number of ANA soldiers were killed, the Sunday Times added.

Speaking after the operation, Brigadier Rupert Jones, Commander Task Force Helmand, said: "It has been a very impressive demonstration of what the Afghan National Army can be capable of."

Master Internet Marketing Strategies With These Top Tips | Maw ...

How to earn more Online with Online marketing ?
Are you finding the information on internet marketing strategies confusing? Perhaps you are finding much of the information contradictory? If so, you are not alone. That's the reason why we developed our website. We spent time trying to gather the facts for ourselves, unfortunately, what we found didn't help us make decisions at all.

Have a look at the article below. It presents the facts in such an easy language that we were able to understand it immediately. If it helps clear the fog for you, please let your friends know about our website, as it might be useful for them also.

?

Internet marketing is no easy feat. There are an overwhelming number of opportunities for you to post ads, reach out to potential customers and send out your marketing slogans. However, how to start off and keep organized throughout the process, is easier than you might think. Take a look at the tips offered in this article and you will find yourself on the way to your internet marketing goals in no time.

Effective internet marketing involves including information that is geared for all of your readers. Some people are very knowledgeable about the product you are selling, and others may have just come across it recently. Include basic information about the product using simple terms and then add complicated technical information. This will help you increase sales by providing a little something for everyone.

While it is true that a lot of Internet marketers are able to advertise their sites and products without spending money at all, this is something that is incredibly rare. Blog businesses hosted on free sites that make 50k a year are pretty much dying off. You will need to invest some money, if only for a legitimate website and some keyword campaigns.

Successful internet marketing depends upon your products being easily and readily available. If your products are easy to order, you will have increased sales. So try to look at things from a customer's viewpoint, even going as far as to buy some of your own products. This way you will know if there are any issues with the ordering process. If you come across any difficulties, don't hesitate to fix them.

Err on the side of caution if you are unsure of what font or style to choose for your website. Not everyone will have perfect sight, especially the older visitors to your page, so use a font that is clear, large and legible if you want to improve the overall experience of your visitors.

Use videos to advertise your website. Online videos are the latest craze in internet marketing. Many sites use online video sharing sites to link videos about their website to the site itself. It is among the latest, cutting edge methods of marketing today. If expense is a concern, there are plenty of low-budget options available.

It's well known that writing articles with unique content is an effective online marketing technique. However, knowing how to format those articles to make them appealing to potential buyers is another matter. Studies have shown that people tend to skim online articles. So how can you use this information to your advantage? Write articles with bulleted lists, emphasize key words or phrases by capitalizing or underlining them or by using bold or italicized letters, use subheadings and keep your paragraphs short and to the point.

If you don't have the full skill set needed to start with Internet Marketing you shouldn't fret. Internet marketing is great because there is a lot of hands on experience available. The best way to start is simply to start. Find a very basic domain name and see what you can do to improve it.

It is important to make the internet marketing experience for your customer as pleasant as possible by providing a website that doesn't look cheap. If you can't afford a professional website design, consider taking a low cost course at a local county college and spruce up your site with the tips that you learn.

No matter what you're changing about your business, whether it's a big change or a simple change of page layout, make sure you tell your customers about it. Keep them informed on everything that's happening with your business. This is easy to do with mass mailers, so there's no excuse not to do it.

Avoid spam, deceitful tricks, and scams. Doing business this way can be tempting at times, especially when the internet feels so anonymous, but they are not worth the potential loss. Tactics such as these might bring a short-term money gain, but they will ruin your reputation and could potentially destroy the business you have worked so hard to create.

Egypt's Mursi accused of murder, kidnapping before rallies

By Crispian Balmer and Asma Alsharif

CAIRO (Reuters) - The Egyptian army is detaining ousted President Mohamed Mursi over accusations of kidnapping, killing soldiers and other charges, the state news agency said on Friday.

The army had previously said it was holding Mursi for his own safety and the report was likely to stoke tension before mass rallies on Friday billed as shows of strength between supporters and opponents of the Islamist Mursi, Egypt's first freely elected leader.

Both sides warned of the potential for bloodshed in Egypt, which has been convulsed by political and economic turmoil since the 2011 uprising that ended 30 years of autocratic rule by the U.S.-backed Hosni Mubarak.

State news agency Mena said the mooted charges against Mursi included conspiring with the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, killing prisoners and officers "deliberately with prior intent", kidnapping officers and soldiers, and setting fire to the prison of Wadi el-Natroun.

They relate to his escape from the prison in 2011, when he was arrested during the uprising against Mubarak, and provide legal grounds for his continued detention.

Mursi has been held by the military since the army ousted him from office on July 3 following huge street protests against his troubled, one-year rule. Washington has previously called for him to be freed.

His Muslim Brotherhood denounced news of the accusations.

"At the end of the day we know all of these charges are nothing more than the fantasy of a few army generals and a military dictatorship," Brotherhood spokesman Gehad El-Haddad said. "We are continuing our protests on the streets."

Throwing down the gauntlet to the Brotherhood, army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has called on Egyptians to rally nationwide on Friday to give the military a "mandate" to confront weeks of violence unleashed by Mursi's removal.

A military official said the army had given Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood a Saturday deadline to end its resistance and join a military-set road map to new elections, signaling a turning point in the confrontation.

The Brotherhood fears a crackdown to wipe out an Islamist movement that emerged from decades in the shadows to win every election since Mubarak's fall but then struggled to tackle Egypt's growing economic and social woes.

CIVIL WAR

The army has threatened to "turn its guns" on those who use violence. The Brotherhood warned of civil war.

"We will not initiate any move, but will definitely react harshly against any calls for violence or black terrorism from Brotherhood leaders or their supporters," an army official told Reuters.

A few hundred pro-army supporters gathered early Friday morning in Tahrir Square, center of two years of turmoil in Egypt, before the main rally which might not peak until after the evening prayer marking the end of the day's Ramadan fast.

"The people, the army and the police are one hand," shouted a policeman, leading a group of chanters.

Armored personnel carriers guarded every entrance to the square.

The Brotherhood, which has manned a street vigil for almost a month with thousands of followers demanding Mursi's return, has called for its own counter-demonstrations.

Confrontation appeared inevitable following a month of clashes in which close to 200 people, mainly supporters of Mursi, have been killed. Many people in the Arab world's most populous country feared the worst.

"I'm staying home all day, it's too dangerous to work. I didn't think things in Egypt could get this bad, but every day you hear about clashes and deaths," said Shadi Mohamed, a 22-year-old taxi driver. "Egypt is a disaster."

There is deepening alarm in the West over the course taken by the country of 84 million people, a pivotal nation between the Middle East and North Africa and recipient of $1.5 billion a year in mainly military aid from the United States.

Signaling its displeasure at recent events, Washington said this week it had delayed delivery of four F-16 fighter jets to Cairo and called on the Egyptian army to exercise "maximum restraint and caution" during Friday's rallies.

Deputy Secretary of State William Burns, however, said on Thursday the Obama administration did not intend to rule on whether Mursi's overthrow constituted a coup, wording that would have triggered the cutoff of U.S. aid.

CONFUSION

Mursi and many other Brotherhood leaders were rounded up by the authorities during the 2011 uprising that eventually swept Mubarak from power.

Many managed to escape in the ensuing confusion, alongside militants from Hamas, a Palestinian offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood that governs in the neighboring Gaza Strip.

Mursi and his fellow Brotherhood members have said they were freed by local residents from the Wadi el-Natroun prison. State news agency Mena said investigating judge Hassan Samir had already confronted Mursi with evidence during questioning.

Brotherhood supporters have been camped out in a Cairo square since June 28, guarded by men with sticks behind barricades and sandbags. They fear a repeat of the July 8 killing of more than 50 Mursi supporters when security forces opened fire outside a Cairo barracks.

Witnesses said army helicopters had dropped flyers at the vigil calling on people to refrain from violence. The Brotherhood says it is the authorities themselves who have stirred up violence to justify their crackdown.

Sisi delivered his call for rallies on Wednesday in full military uniform and dark sunglasses. He was appointed by Mursi in a bid by the president to rein in Egypt's all-powerful military, but Sisi turned against him after a year in which the economy floundered and support for the Brotherhood fell.

Joe Donnelly wrote a new post, "I have no interest in even buying an Xbox One, let alone developing for it," says Retro City Rampage dev after Microsoft U-turn, on the site BeefJack

Microsoft completed yet another U-turn yesterday, announcing indie developers will actually be able self-publish on Xbox One. Sounds good, yeah? Well, yeah, but perhaps not as good as you might think, says?Brian Provinciano.

Xbox One header white

So, the Xbox One has made yet another 180. It?s actually getting to that stage now where it?s almost unsurprising. As James Haresign quite rightly pointed out this morning, Marc Whitten?s statement was less an acknowledgment of policy change, but more a ?we?re pulling the wool over your eyes, even though we know you know what we?re doing? kind of statement; pretty much in-line with Microsoft?s indecisive rhetoric up until now.

The policy change is no doubt a good thing for indie developers, but Retro City Rampage dev Brian Provinciano, although happy with the change, was keen not to fall into any sense of false security.??I?m very happy to see this,? says Provinciano in a statement made Engadget. ?After all of the developers have spoken out, they?re finally listening. However, this is yet another example of them changing policy, but it sounding better than it is when the whole story is revealed. Make no mistake; while this is a great thing, it?s again not the equivalent to what other platforms offer.

?On PS4, for example, developers can tap right into the system; use every bit of RAM and all of its power. Indies have access to everything that the AAA studios do, from platform support to development and release. The indication on Xbox One is that it?s essentially XBLIG 2.0. Instead of XNA, it?s Windows 8. Windows 8, which is already struggling to gain developer interest, will gain a boost from developers wishing to target the console. However, it won?t be as full-fledged as published games on the system.?

Provinciano then went on to speak of his past relationship with Microsoft and the Xbox 360, urging consumers to keep their eyes peeled for any ?strings attached? to this policy change.

?After my experience working with them to release on Xbox 360, I have no interest in even buying an Xbox One, let alone developing for it,? Provinciano continued. ?The policy changes are great, but they don?t undo the experience I had. I?m not ready to forget what I went through. Working with Microsoft was the unhappiest point of my career. Policies are one thing, but developer relations are another.

?It?s important to me that consumers don?t see things as black and white. There are still strings attached to this policy change.?

NCQA Recognizes NEW Health as Patient-Centered Medical Home ...

NCQA_Logo_Centered-WHITEThe National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) recently recognized North End Waterfront Health as a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH). The health center received this accolade for using evidence-based, patient-centered processes that focus on highly coordinated care and long term participative relationships.

The NCQA is a private, non-profit organization whose goal is to improve the healthcare system in the United States.

?We are very pleased that all of our staff?s hard work has resulted in this prestigious recognition,? said Jim Luisi, CEO of NEW Health. ?Becoming a patient-centered medical home is just one of the many ways we are striving to give our patients the best possible health care.?

The PCMH model of care emphasizes care coordination and communication to transform primary care into ?what patients want it to be.? Research shows that medical homes can lead to higher quality and lower costs, and improve both patients? and providers? reported experience of care.

NEW Health, a Massachusetts General Hospital affiliate, is the first MGH health center to receive this NCQA recognition. The Joint Commission, an independent organization that accredits health care facilities, also recognized NEW Health as a PCMH last year.

?It was an easy decision for us to begin practicing under the PCMH model of care because the goal is to improve the health of all of our patients ? focusing on chronic problems such as diabetes, cardiovascular, behavioral health, and smoking cessation,? says John Foster, MD, chief medical officer of NEW Health. ?I?m proud that the NCQA recognized our efforts, which is thanks in large part to the dedication of our staff.?

New, Cheaper Smartphone Plans

However much you pay every month for your cell phone service, it?s probably too much; between $80-100 a month if you own a smartphone. But good news: Facing stiff competition from budget carriers, all of the major networks recently began offering cheaper ?prepaid? plans ? which could save you a ton of money.

Prepaid Plans
Instead of entering a two-year contract, a ?prepaid plan? enables you to pay monthly, without a commitment to stay with a particular service provider. These no-contract, prepaid phone plans used to be just for dumb-phones ? you know, what the manufacturers call ?feature phones? (but actually have few usable features). Or, you could get a great deal if all you did was talk and text ? no need for web.

But then budget carriers like Straight Talk, Boost, and MetroPCS started offering monthly plans that included web access.

Consumer-driven Change
Consumers have done the math: Buying a phone up front and paying a lower monthly fee can be way cheaper than a two-year contract. And the demand for this kind of arrangement has shaken up the industry. According to a study by the NPD Group, by the beginning of 2013, 32% of all smartphone sales were prepaid models. That popularity has forced all the major carriers to roll out prepaid smartphone plans ? and that?s on their super fast 4G and LTE networks.

So now the world has really changed. Today, you can find $30 a month plans for even the newest smartphones.

The Deals:

  • If you?re a heavy talk and data user, the best plan is on Sprint?s network through Boost Mobile: $50/month for 2.5 GB of data. (Compare this to Verizon and AT&T?s plans ? $60/month for 2 GB.) Better yet, if you make six, monthly, on-time payments in a row, Boost will knock $5 off your monthly bill every month thereafter. They?ll reduce your bill again at 12 months, and again at 18 months, so that after a year and a half you could be paying as little as $35/month ? if you haven?t switched plans by then.
  • If you don?t talk much but use a lot of web access (say, you?re a teenager), Virgin Mobile has a $35/month for 300 minutes of talk ? and unlimited text and data.
  • If you use a moderate amount of data but want unlimited talk and text, T-Mobile offers unlimited talk and text, plus 500 MB of data for $50/month.
  • The cheapest deal I?ve recently seen form the big carriers: If you dig down deep on T-Mobile?s prepaid plan page, you?ll find a plan with only 100 minutes of talk, but unlimited text and data for ? get this ? $30 a month.
  • And don?t forget the budget carriers who started it all: Straight Talk, Walmart Mobile, Ting, Giv Mobile, Simple Mobile. Many of these have $35 and $40 a month plans and if you?re willing to do the digging to find out about their coverage, speeds, and plans, they can be a great way to save.

Cautions:
Throttling: If you stream a lot of video or otherwise use a lot of data, some of these carriers will throttle your data - meaning they?ll slow your streaming way down

A prepaid phone is not the same as an unlocked phone: If you buy a prepaid phone from a carrier, it probably won?t work with another carrier?s service. If you buy an unlocked phone from a third party (like Amazon Wireless or Best Buy), you can use it with other carriers. But switching around has some limitations and you need to do your homework. Best bet is if you think you may want to switch carriers mid-stream, or if you travel a lot and want to pop in a local SIM card overseas, get an unlocked GSM phone.

[Related: How to Get Deals on Amazon]

What You Should Do
If your contract is up for renewal (or has already expired), you face a decision point ? go monthly or enter a new two-year contract.

If you own a phone you?re happy enough with, this is a no brainer. Shop around for a monthly plan that will work with your phone. If you can go from $90/month to $50, for example, that?s a savings of $960 over a two-year period.

If you need to buy a new phone, you have to factor in the cost of that phone, and the math becomes a little trickier. For example, say you currently pay $80/month ($40/month for 450 voice minutes, plus $20/month for 300 MB of data, plus $20/month for texts) on AT&T. That?s $1920 over two years. You could cut that back to their somewhat comparable $60/month plan and save $480 over two years. But if you want to buy a new Galaxy S4, and bring that over, you have to factor in the $619 cost of the phone ? comparing it to getting the same phone for $199 as part of a two-year contract.

ATT/Galaxy SIV Prepaid 2-year Contract
Service $60 $80
Phone $640 $199
Total over 2 years $2080 $2119

This is the most expensive current phone on one of the most expensive prepaid plans, and you?d still save $39 by switching. But look at a different scenario where you buy the Galaxy SIII for $559 and go to T-Mobile?s $30 a month plan, which gets you 100 minutes of talk, unlimited text and data: You save almost $500.

T-Mobile/Galaxy SIII Prepaid 2-year Contract
Service $30 $80
Phone $559 $49
Total over 2 years $1279 $1969

And if you?re willing to try a cheaper carrier and buy a slightly cheaper phone, or better yet, if you already own a phone, then prepaid will save you a ton.

Activision calls BS to threats from gaming community - Unscripted 360

In a recent?blog from Activision?s community manager Dan Amrich, he expresses his view of the treatment of game developers that stemmed from a?recent backlash of a patch that was updated on the Treyarch?s?Call of Duty Black Ops II?video game.

The update, made by Treyarch?s David Vonderhaar,?reduces the damage ?and speed of certain weapons. Vonderhaar has been hit with violent threats and other negative comments by the gaming community since the update. In other words, gamers were really pissed. Dan Amrich came to Vonderhaar?s defense saying,

?One of [Vonderhaar]?s many responsibilities is to keep the game as balanced as possible, yet when he does make these changes, he often gets told he should die in a fire or kill himself or is a horrible person. If anyone thinks for a second that this is okay, it is not. But if the loudest voices in the Call of Duty ?community? act like an angry mob instead, guess how the entire world views Call of Duty?. Now consider that these Internet Tough Guy rants and demands are not unique to COD, but exist everywhere, in many gaming communities. This is why the world often does not take gaming seriously; this is why gamers are assumed to be immature, whiny assh***s. Because the immature, whiny assh***s are louder.?

call-of-duty-black-ops-2

Amrich closes his comments by saying,???If you enjoy your games have a little respect for the people who make them ? and stop threatening them with bodily harm every time they do their job.?

I enjoy gaming as a hobby but to wish death or harm to?someone over a video game?is hitting below the belt. While I do enjoy playing Black Ops II, it?s the ignorant people online that make me mute my mic completely so I don?t have to be exposed to all the negativity.

What say you? Do you think think gamers have a right to complain about changes to their favorite titles?

Covenant Relationships: Why Love is Like Cooking

Maya Angelou said Cooking is like writing poetry, be careful in the choice your ingredients and respectful of how they work together. That?s true of all the efforts in life. Cooking is like love.

Every now and then I get an itch to try to make something that sounds exotic and delectable and difficult, only to learn that it?s not nearly as tricky to make as I?d thought and so then I exercise less caution only to come to the stark realisation that it takes just as much caution as many other recipes I?ve come across.?

This was the case when I decided to make home made apple crumble. Why make apple crumble at home when you can buy it at a supermarket and toss it in the microwave? Well, Because it?s satisfying to do things yourself, and I admit it, sometimes it?s cool to impress my husband with something that seems fancy.

But back to the issue of how it is like love. You see after I came across the recipe online I realised I had almost all the ingredients at home; sugar, some apples, flour, digestive biscuits and nutmeg and butter. If I didn?t have any of these ingredients or I had chosen to use pawpaw and apples I would have been making something else. But because I almost always find recipes difficult to follow the first few times, I re-wrote this one to be a little easier for a novice like me.

Allowing the wrong ingredients into your relationships can make a horrible concoction. How many times have you embarked on a relationship and thought ?Hey, this relationship thing is so easy, he loves me + I love him= 2 hearts that beat as one". Well, if it was that easy why do we have marriages ending after just one year, why do we see relationships where it seems all they ever do is fight and bicker? The same reason why the centre of my apple crumble wasn't entirely cooked, because; when the recipe told me to preheat the oven for some time they meant it, I shouldn't have put it in it in too soon.

Then it got to the baking stage. The recipe said cook for 30 minutes but I was in a hurry to taste it and in baking they tell you if you can smell it, it is probably ready. So, I took it out of the oven checked it with a toothpick and took a slice. I wasn't going to waste my time or gas for a minute more. In love it is very similar. A relationship begins and before you can say jack, the next thing on the menu is some physical intimacy...Chop-chop, no time to waste...

Time will expand or contract depending on our priorities. Some people build wonderful, loving relationships because the time they invest is mindful and meaningful. The greatest gift we can give a loved one is our full presence and patience? joy and harmony is always the experience if genuine love is the center of attention. If we just rush through because we want to enjoy what our friends say their relationships/marriages are like, or what you assume they are like, based on their Facebook album or Blackberry messenger display pictures, you?ll end up with what you didn't quite expect.

I could go on and on but let me pause here. I am an apple crumble expert now (If i do say so myself), so maybe sometimes it takes some trial and error, or as they say, practice makes perfect. But with love, as with cooking, always proceed with caution.

Remember your love is like cooking, it has the ingredients of a lifetime!
